First Day of School & Shopping

January 14, 2008

After my last entry, We just had a day of planning our trips for the semester. Everything was closed since it was Sunday, so we cleaned the apartment and went to the market. We had everyone over in our apartment (Lisa, Nicole and both the boys from downstairs and upstairs) and we all ate leftover pasta and just hung out. We made a list of ALL the things we wanted to do while we are here and all the places we want to go outside of Barcelona.
We tried to go to sleep early before our first day of school on Monday, but didn't get everyone out till around 11:30 (compared to the recent nights of staying up till 6 a.m. thats pretty early). We promptly woke up at 7 Monday morning, to an absolutely freezing apartment, showered, and got ready for our first day of school. We met up with our friends, went to our cafe (the one right next door, where we now are bff with the people who work there... our favorite is 'Ramon', he loves us) we got cafe con leches like always and headed off to school.
We felt like we were in elementary school again because we walked to school in a group, had all our classes in the same building, just different rooms, had a set break time (with all the students) and an hour break for lunch where we all went across the street for 'tapas' (but i'll get to that). So school was great! We go to the Autonomous school which is more prestigious than the other school in Barcelona. All the teachers love their jobs and are soo nice (we heard this before from our advisers and it was definitely true). The classes are small and very personal... and the building of the University itself is stunningly beautiful.
I am taking International Marketing, Cross-Cultural Management, Spanish Civilization & Culture and Spanish VII. They are very very very looong classes. But it goes by quick. Noelle and I have 3 classes together which is nice, and I dont have any with Ash :(. At lunch time, the 5 of us (us three and the boys) went to a tapas bar across the street... and i am still having a lot of trouble eating the food, but everyday I get yelled at by noe and ash so believe me... I'm trying my best!
Spanish is by far my favorite class!!! Noelle and I are like the best speakers in the class and were receiving a great deal of 'Muy Bien's' from our professora. It immediately came back to me once I was back in class. I love it... I really hope I am fluent by the time I leave here... Noelle and I are devoting 2 hours everyday (outside of school) to solamente hablan en espanol (You get it).
After school, we walked home, got ashley, and took the metro with the boys to La Rambla to check out a gym we wanted to join. We looked at it but it is way too far to walk and kind of a pain to get to, so we are going to keep looking. We then met up with our other friends and went shopping around town. They have H&M and Zara here, as well as a million and one cute shops. Once the stores started to close around nine, we began walking back to the metro but stopped for our first taste of Spanish gelato. The three of us got Dulce de Leche, Mint Chip, and Chocolate Hazelnut. It was delish!!!! Then we had a giggle fest on the metro home... haha.
Now we are just sitting here, updating our lives and about to drink some sangria... as always! haha... I love this life!!!!

Jess, or "monkey-face", WOW!!This is such a great thing. I feel as if I am right there in Barcelona with all of you. So different from the 60's when I could only afford to make a 3 minute phone call home once a month. Although I've spent time in Barcelona hearing you talk about all of your activities I must have missed alot! I am just soooo glad that you are having so much fun and are so amazed at being there. Some daughters would hate it and wish that they were home. I hope that it continues to be amazing and magical for you!!
I know that I don't have to tell YOU to get out and hang with the people and really experience life in Barcelona and Spain, (and wherever else you travel).
I was kind of concerned that you were only going to hang with frat boys from Chicago. But I know you will find the Spanish people so warm and wonderful.
So keep up the journal writing and, most of all-HAVE FUN!!!!
p.s. Don't worry, I'll talk to Mom if you want to stay in Barcelona after the semester ends, Ha Ha.
Love you with all my heart!!!

Hi Jess,

I just want you to know that I had my Spanish/English dictionary out to help me with some of the words. Pretty sad, huh?
