Sitting on My Balcony...

January 31, 2008

Its a gorgeous Thursday afternoon and I am just sitting outside on our balcony in disbelief that I live in this beautiful city. Everyday, I see something new or learn something for the first time and I can't hold back a smile because everything here is just so perfect. Being immersed in a new and completely different culture has already given me so much of a new perspective on so many things. I couldn't be happier.
So, a lot of events have taken place since last time... some good, some bad. After my last entry on Sunday, we went to school Monday, like usual and then went to the gym after school. I seriously LOVE school. I love all of my teachers and I love the people in my classes. I have made a lot of friends and met a lot of people from not only all over the U.S., but also from Germany and Russia. I have to admit that all my classes are ridiculously easy, but hey, I'm not complaining. We went to the market after the gym (this is kind of our Mon. Wed. routine: school, gym, market & home) and we happened to meet these two guys who go to our school, UAB, and are from California. They go to ASU and are really nice. Pretty much, if you are in public and you hear someone speaking English, you ask them where they are from and you have an instant connection. So that is exactly what happened, and the fact that they lived right by us was a plus too.
They invited us to go out to this bar called 'Taberna' that night because it was having a party and one of their roommates knows people who work there. There are literally parties every single night here... I don't know how they do it. So Ashley and I were the only ones who wanted to go out, so we went over to there apartment and played drinking games with them (5 guys live there, all from the U.S.) which was sooo much fun and then went to the bar. The bar was packed and with practically all Americans. Personally, I like it when there are not a lot of Americans 1. because foreign people are more interesting to talk to 2. girls are competition (haha) and 3. foreign boys are wayy cuter. So anyways, it was pretty fun and we just danced a lot and ran into people from school and our program which was fun. Ash and I were dancing and I saw this gorgeous guy who looked Spanish and I told Ash that I HAD to talk to him. haha. So we went over by him and started dancing and we finally got to talking and ended up talking the whole night.
He is from Spain and is 22... long story short, we are going on a date today :)... haha. His text messages are so funny because his English is good but not great and I have to decipher what he is trying to say. I can't complain porque mi espanol es muy mal tambien. Anyways... I'm going to be careful, I know!!!
We left and got home at about 4... and had class at 9. So Tuesday was rough... We woke up late and the girls were saying they didn't want to go to class but I made them get up and get ready. We left the house in a rush and were walking really fast to school. When we got to the crosswalk right in front of school, the cars were stopped because of traffic, our walk light was red and two lanes were letting us walk. What we didn't know, is that there was a third lane that wasn't stopped, so we began walking... and I don't know exactly how to put this, but there was a car going about 25 mph and sideswiped Noelle and I. We both were hit on our right side and flew back away from the car. I was in so much shock that I didn't feel any pain I was just shaking and had no obvious injuries. Noelle on the other hand got her foot ran over and we didn't know how bad she was hurt. It was so unbelievably scary and she had to go the the hospital in an ambulance. The hospital is right next to our school. I called Julia the second it happened and she was there within 5 minutes. I seriously cannot explain how amazing she is. With everything that has been happening to us, she never leaves our side. We would be lost without her. She worries about us and takes care of us as if she was our mom and is ALWAYS there when we need her. We were supposed to go to the police station with her that day to take care of stuff from the Saturday night incident but we had to postpone it due to the accident that morning. Noelle is hanging in there, her foot is not broken but very very hurt as well as her elbow and we are both unbelievable sore. My leg hurt but I am just thankful that nothing worse happened. We are very lucky.... it was just so scary!!!
So anyways... that shook us all up quite a bit. And poor Ashley had to witness it all and we both broke down crying in the hospital. Whew! Well needless to say, we did nothing all day but lie in bed and Ash and I went to the police station with Julia. Alex (Our best guy friend upstairs) brought noelle and I flowers to feel better... it was so cute!!! We got home and just took it easy all night.
Wednesday we went to school and planned to go on a Flamenco dancing bar crawl thing with friends from our program. Dionne and Noelle were not feeling up to it, but Ash and I met up with everyone and it ended up being such a blast!!! It was 8 of us girls and like 9 girls from England who were just in Barcelona for the week for a "hairdresser convention'. We started at one bar, then went to another bar for 'tapas and sangria' and it was soo much fun!!! The girls we met were amazing and we all hit it off immediately! We then went to the Flamenco bar where I sat at a table with these three girls from Canada and Australia... they were sooo much fun too!!! The four of us bought a pitcher of sangria and watched the Flamenco show. It was really neat! haha. It was live music and the woman dancing was great!
After that we went to a place called 'Bar Nu' and just sat at tables laughing and talking with everyone. It ended up being such a fun night and we want to do it again (we want to do everything again!!!). Well I just went to school this morning and it was so cute (because in Barcelona and surrounding cities it is 'Carnaval' this weekend and its just a huge festival) all the parents walk their kids to school in the morning (which makes me smile every morning) and the kids were all dressed up in cute little costumes. I love it!!! So I am just hanging out and taking care of Noelle right now...lol but I am so excited for this weekend. A big group of us are going to Sitges this weekend for the Carnaval celebration. Its about a half hour away and we are staying from Saturday till Sunday. Supposedly its the place to be... as if Barcelona isn't crazy enough. So I can't wait to write all about that!!! :) Oh, and I uploaded new pictures!!!

We are certainly proud of you and envious of your travels.. (it's a good envy) We are privileged to be included in the journal entries. However, because we are older, you may want to relay the scary parts(accidents etc.) in invisible ink.
We love you and perhaps, will get a chance to see you before Thanksgiving. In the meantime, keep on keepin' on. Try not to break too many hearts..
