It's been a huge weekend and a bit depressing to be going back to work this afternoon but you get that. On Saturday we made the pilgrimage to Saint Andrews which was only an hour and a half by bus.
You may or may not know that I really enjoy the odd game of golf when I get the opportunity (I think watching the game is like watching grass grow) so it was a bit of a buzz to go to the place where it all began, and where the rules of the game are still governed from (unless you play in the U.S).
The thing that struck me most about the town of Saint Andrews was the it was a golf town. "No shit" you may be thinking. But if you've ever been to a "surfing" town in Australia you would have noticed that everybody wears surfing brand clothes, every second shop sell board shorts and surf boards etc. Well it's the same for Saint Andrews except they look like they're dressed up to play golf, and every second store is some sort of golfing shop.
I was surprised to learn that we were allowed to wander around the course itself, we obviously weren't allowed to stumble onto the greens and fairways, but we followed the public access paths and got to see a fair amount of the course.
We got plenty of photos and Mel and I stopped for some lunch at the far end of the course and enjoyed sitting by the beach. We headed back to town and bought a couple of souvenirs and then wandered off into some local parkland to do some geocaching. The weather caught me by surprise and I got some pretty harsh sunburn on top of my freshly shaved noggin.
On Sunday we went for a stomp through Holyrood Park, it's a huge tract of parkland that sits very close to the city itself. You may have read about our trip to the top of Arthur's Seat when we first got here. Well Holyrood Park is the home of Arthur's Seat and much more. I think we covered the majority of the parkland and our legs were feeling it by the end. We went to the Sheep Heid Inn (the ye olde pub I've written about previously) and had a great pub meal.
Yesterday we did some more wandering around Edinburgh. We finished our free t-shirt pub crawl while we were at it. We just have to head back to the World's End pub to collect it. We also headed up to Leith to meet a couple of friends for a beer and a snack. To be honest there's too much to write about from the weekend, but there are heaps of new photos and videos to check out.
Well that's about it for now, I'll be in touch.
Justin.
