First week in New Zealand

June 4, 2007 - Wanaka, New Zealand

I arrived in New Zealand on the 23rd, Paula meet me at the airport and took me to her home. I spent the evening with the grimes/ tarrants. Then at midnight Arthur and me went and picked up Guy from the airport.
I got up at 7am and watched the second half of the ac Milan and Liverpool match with Alex, Nick and Anthony. Then went back to bed, finally got up at 1 in the afternoon and wondered round Wellington. We went in to a museum and leant about the fault line in the NZ plus all their birds and other random stuff. Then we went and watched pirates 3 at the cinema which the third lord of the rings was shown at.
Next few days we spent deciding what to do while in New Zealand and getting to know Wellington. It’s a really nice city.
On Tuesday 29th we got the ferry across to Picton on the south island and spent one night there before hiring a car for two weeks. We drove to Westport where we spent the night in the car on the side of the road. The drive was really windy through the mountains but the views were amazing. We went for a walk in one of the nation parks and got to watch the waves crash a cross the rocks and shot up between some of them. Then droved on to Franz Josef when the one of the glaciers are. On the way there it started raining and be came really cloud it wasn’t possible to see any of the mountains any more. The town was in a middle of a misty. We hoped to do a walk on the glaciers but decided it was too wet and the weather wasn’t looking good the next day either. So guy and I decide to walk up to the glaciers and see how visible it was before deciding what to do. It was nearly a half hour walk up to it and was getting dark on the way back so was hard to find our way and we got soaked in the rain and stepped in streams. We looked like drowned rats. We decide to drive on to fox glacier and spend the night in a hostel so we can dry our clothes out. Next day we want to do a walk on the fox glaciers but it was still raining and they had cancelled all the walks to the glaciers so we booked on to the next morning and went for a walk up to the glaciers in the afternoon when the clouds finally cleared. The town suddenly had mountains surrounding it.
The glacier had made itself a cave at the entrance to let all the rain that had fall on it out and the cave was collapsing in on itself. It was really weird to watch huge pieces of ice fall in to the river and made loud bang.
The next morning we went on to the ice and it was really pretty. We got to crawl through a tunnel the ice had made and in to a cave. It was raining and very cold; the ice was really slippery and we had to watch how we step. That night we drove to Haast for the night and watch the rugby; New Zealand v France in the only pub in the town and slept in the car park.
Next day drove on to wanaka which is a small holiday village round a lake and its really pretty. We spent the next day at puzzel world getting lots in the maze and get frustrated at the puzzels they had out to play with.
