Cairns

October 30, 2006 - Cairns, Australia

On Wednesday 18th, I flew to Cairns with my room mates Chrissie and Katie plus Bear, the Norway guy. We arrived late at night and it was pouring down with rain. We got a shuttle bus to the hostel called Zanzibar. I was put in a room with five other people, 3 of whom left the next morning. The hostel had a pool which I went in early next morning.
We went and explored Cairns on the Thursday, it’s a quiet town. We walked to the beach, which looked horrible. You can’t swim in the water anyway due to the Box jelly fish, which can kill. But there was a lagoon; a swimming pool with a fake beach on one end, so we took a dip in there. That evening we met a girl from England, who just arrived, called Sarah.
On the Friday, Sarah, Katie and I went job hunting hoping to find some bar or waitress work, we did CVs in the morning and then walked around asking random places. No luck, thou did meet a couple of the locals that suggested going to Gilligan’s that night, turned out to be a great suggestion.
So that night we dragged the gang out to Gilligan’s, downstairs it was a bit like Walkabout in Nottingham. They had a live band playing to begin with and when they left they turned the stage into a dance floor. We were talking to some navy guys when we discovered upstairs. It was gorgeous upstairs, they had beds going a long one side and it looked very posh. We stayed there til 3 am closing time.
Next day, Sarah and I just spent the day lazing around. It was Zanzibar’s 10th birthday so they had a big party with free food. :D The food is amazing at this place. I was chatting to a Scotsman called Ross all night and met some guys from Holland. At 11 when the party started to die down we all went off to Gilligan’s again.
Sunday, we did sum more job hunting and looked at some places to start plus Bear and I booked our diving course. Later I felt really ill and went to bed early only to get up a few hours later feeling worse so Chrissie took me to the doctors, who informed me that I had tonsillitis and gave me lots of pills to take.
Next day we got up at 7 am and jumped on a tour bus to Cape Tribulation. One of the pills the doc gave me made me really drowsy so don’t remember much of the tour up there expect stopping in the middle of the jungle, everyone got a tour round while I stayed on the bus and i saw an emergency telephone with “out of order” on it.
We stayed at a random hostel where the internet didn’t work; payphone was broken plus no signal from any mobiles. I spent the whole time we were up there in bed. A really nice girl from Germany looked after me during the night, telling me where everything was plus getting me water and cups of tea. I felt slightly better at 2 pm the next day so went for a little walk to the beach and to a look out point. At 4pm we jumped back on the coach to Cairns.
