Fraser Island plus Hervey Bay

January 5, 2007 - Fraser Island, Australia

The first day in Harvey it rained, it was like being back in England. I did my washing which then took all day and night to get dry.
In the evening we met our Fraser Island group. There were 3 Germans, 2 Swiss and an Italian, plus Graham and myself.
We watched a video about the island and how to be dingo aware and then sorted though a shopping list. We went to the butchers for meat and the Bottle shop for beer. Then to Spa for the rest of the food essentials.
One of the Germans called Simon was traveling with the Italian, Valerio. They were were in our room so I was chatting to them before going to bed. The other Germans were Tom and Flo and the Swiss couple, Eve and Rogar.
We got up the next morning at 5am, put our backpacks into storage. We checked the equipment we'd been given and got the beers and meat before packing everything into the 4x4. Valerio got to drive the first day. We drove to the ferry and we went to Lake McKenzie which was beautiful, but packed with people. We went for a swim and laid on the beach. Then we drove to Indian head. It took us 2 hours to get to the beach. The roads were very bumping plus they’re just big enough for one vehicle, so every so often we had to pull over to let someone else pass.
Once we got to the beach it was lot smoother, although after about an hour of driving we got pulled over by the police. Valerio got fined for not wearing his seatbelt.
We kept driving for another hour but as the tide was creeping up on us, we eventually gave up getting to Indian head that day and decided to do it the next morning. We found a nice spot and set up camp. Simon and I made lunch while everyone else put the tents up.
We then went to a walk up the hill; the view was beautiful from the top. It also became the toilet for the night. We then spent some time on the beach before starting to cook as the sun went down. It got dark very quickly and ended up cooking in darkness so we just had pasta in tomato sauce; leaving the meat for the next night.
We got up at 6am the next day and went to Indian head. We climbed to the top of the cliff and got some nice photos, then we went to Champaign pools where Tom and I went for a swim 'til it started raining.
We then headed to Lake Allom and saw lots of turtles. After lunch we went to Elda creek, which was just a lake that was really cold. Flo, Tom and I walked along it until we could go no further. I then went for a swim against the current.
We then started a search for the perfect spot which took a lot longer than we hoped, we got bogged twice and finally settled on a less than perfect spot and started cooking before the sun went down. We cooked all the meat up and had a right feast. We then stayed up drinking and watching the stars till the early hours.
We got up late the next day and went back to Lake McKenzie to chill out and go for a swim to get clean. We then caught the ferry back to Harvey bay.
We discovered back at the hostel that we still had quite a bit of pasta and tuna left over so we brought some salad and sauce. We cooked it all up together and ate it all. I then went to bed along with Valerio at 5pm.
Got woken up by Simon at 8pm, time to go out and celebrate the new year. I had a shower and got dressed up. I had a red bull to wake me up. We joined another group that had been on Fraser Island the day before and we went in search of a nice club. First we went to beaches which was really quiet so went in search of somewhere else, but everywhere was either full and had to pay to get in and didn’t allow flip flops. So we ended up heading back to the beaches for 11 30. It was a lot busier now and the rest of the night turned out to be good; dancing on tables, going for a dip in the pool, setting shots on fire. It was a lot of fun.
