Spent the last few days in Krabi. one night in Krabi town then a fewmore on the beaches that
surround it. It is not an island as I at firstthought but is set along a peninsula with mangrove estuaries scatteredamongst the beaches. Was picked up from the ferry by a very zealoustaxi driver who as well as charging me for the ride into Krabi Town wasintent on making a fat commision on the guest house I would stay in.All my sugfgestions were met with tut tut's and tales of rats andcockroaches and food poisoning followed by a list of other (bigcommision paying) places that were great value, beautiful, just what Ineeded etc. I gave in and let him show me these 'paradise' hotels andwas quite pleasantly suprised by the rooms and rates, so we both cameout happy. Sometimes it is better to go with the flow- particularly ifyou have a Thai Whisky hangover.
I also stayed at Hat Tonsai, asmall beach only accessible by long tail boat, and very sleepy. It isparticulalry popular with climbers as the beaches are surrounded byhuge limestone cliffs. You'd have to see the photos to understand but Iforgot my card reader. Will put them up next time. And did I try therock climbing? No, it was way too hot, but i watched them attempt toclimb the clifffs. That was fun. I just lay in the water stayingrefreshed. Tonsai reminded me of Moa Island, it had a tightknitcommunity and every evening the children would head to the beach toswim amongst the boats and play soccer.
And the monkeys- so many! The day I arrived I went for a wander tothe beach- all the bungalows
were set high in the jungle and you had towalk along a windy dusty path to
reach the beach. As I was walking downam entire family of monkeys crossed the road in front of me, makingmonkey noises and fighting each other. If that wasn't exciting enough, later as I was showering I could hear the trees rustling above me. Ilooked up, yes, my bathroom was open air- and what should I see butthree pairs of monkey eyes staring at me. These were special monkeys-besides being perverts, they were dark grey with long white tails andtheir eyes were encircled in furry white circles. So theirĀ eyeslooked gigantic as if I'd frightened them. So, happy monkey days all up.
Note to fellow travellers or inexperienced walkers: If the signreads 'Jungle Trek', it means it will be very steep, rocky, steamy anda huge workout. I took the path to travel over the mountain to nearbyRailey Beach, this saved me 50 baht as I could have caught a long tailboat or waited for midnight when the tide goes so far out you can walkaround the headland. It was a long tiring day. There's more to tell ofthat day- but that particular story is a work in progress and will beadded when I am somewhere with cheaper internet access.
I am now on Koh Pha-ngan. It is the first day of the Sonkran festival, otherwiseknown as The Water Festival. Will add more on that soon as the day hasonly just begun...and should be a funfilled action packed water soakingday.
Have been meeting some amazing people and a number of girlsthat are travelling alone and have had a good time swapping notes onour experiences.
This has been a dull blog, but trust me it will improve with photos and a few more stories in the works...
