Edinburgh Zoo and The Royal Yacht Britannia

June 16, 2008 - Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Sheri and I had a lovely day at the Zoo on Friday.  It was like a step back in time for me as I spent a lot of happy times there when I was young.  Although there were a lot of changes somethings stayed the same.  There is a wonderful new chimpanzee exhibit which had just opened earlier this year and several other new exhibits including the only koalas in the UK.  We only managed to see one of the two koalas and it was asleep (surprise, surprise!).

Sheri and I spent a lot of time watching the penguins and the Diana monkeys which were very entertaining.  The weather was perfect with blue skies for most of the day.

At night we met my brother and his partner for a drink at the local club and we watched Euro 2008 on tv and even had a game of bingo!

On Saturday we met Toby for breakfast in town then we headed down to Ocean Terminal to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia, which is berthed permanently in Edinburgh.  It was an enjoyable visit looking and learning about royal life at sea and there were even some of the crew there telling some wonderful stories about the royal family aboard.

On Sunday my friend Fiona picked us up in her car and after collecting Toby from his hostel we then headed out to see her Mum.  I hadn't seen her for probably 35 years so it was wonderful catching up.  We spent a couple of hours catching up and had some wonderful laughs.

From there we travelling across the Firth of Forth on the Forth Road Bridge to Fiona's home in Dunfermline (about 30 mins from Edinburgh).  Fiona's husband Jim had grand plans for a barbeque but when we arrived he was still on the golf course.  During the course of the afternoon the weather deteriorated and by the time he got home and the got the barbeque started the rain had also started but as you can see from the photos, cooking continued under the shelter of two large golf umbrellas.  The evening passed with a succession of neighbours and young people calling in for a drink which was very relaxing.

Today we are heading up to St Andrews and then around some of the small fishing villages so should get some good photos today.  The weather is a bit overcast but they assure us that is it going to be a good day!

You are having an exciting trip and seeing lots of places and meeting with lots of family and friends. I keep thinking of you every day and look forward to hearing all your news first hand! The weather sounds OK but that is not why you are there is it? Give my love to my friend who lives in Balmullo overlooking St Andrews - a blown kiss from Gwen would be OK! Enjoy the rest of the trip - it usually happens that everything speeds up and the last couple of weeks go really, really fast - sorry to say that! Missing you heaps. Gwennie
