Last night in New York

March 18, 2008 - New York, New York, United States

Hello everyone!
First of all, thanks for all the lovely messages even if there is nothing much yet in this blog. LOL It always makes my day to hear from my people in Europe and even in Australia! Woohoo so good to finally hear from you, Ingrid/Lester/Neneh and Soraya!

So this is my last night in the big apple, I'm so sad to leave this city, I love it so much! Never thought I'd enjoy so much  all this concrete and skyscrapers. I have felt in love with New York, it really remind me of when I saw London for the first time. I guess in a way those two cities are very similar, both very mythic.

I have seen so much during those 6 days that it would take a long time to talk about everything. I have walked a lot also, it is very easy in this massive city to walk for too long, the distances are so big and there are not that many subway stations. Also with my head up all the time to admire the buildings, now my lower back really hurts. But enough with the complaints ;)

I have pretty seen all the famous spots except for the Statue of Liberty which I saw from a long distance but not close enough to properly admire it. With its crown closed to the public therefore only the base is accessible, it wasn't at the top of my list and the boat tour I was supposed to do today that would have taken me very close to it, was cancelled!!!! Oh well, I'm having another day in New York just before going back to London so maybe I'll have a date with this New York babe :)

My highlights I would say are:

- going up the Empire state Building at sunset (that was something!)
- the Museum of Modern Art
- the Metropolitan Museum of Art
- Central Park
- walking on Brooklyn Bridge towards Manhattan
- Greenwich Village
- my first time on Times Square
- Central Station
- all the lovely vegetarian food
- the subway (even if it's very easy to get lost and if the station are so big that you are never quite sure which one of the 8 exits you need to take)
- the people being so friendly and helpful
- seeing some crazy americans (in particular the one that kept shouting "New Yoooork" on Times Square!!)
- feeling like being in a movie all the time
- being amazed every 100 meters by the architecture (never thought it would be that beautiful and rich!)

I'm sure I'm missing something but I should probably say that I loved almost everything, only one big disappointment The Guggenheim Museum. It was the museum I was the most looking forward to seeing and i wish I hadn't been there. I didn't like their permanent collection nor their temporary exhibition. Also, the building is being refurbished and the outside is covered with big sheets of plastic so since the highlight of this museum is its architecture, it probably explains why I was disappointed.

Ok, I'm very tired now and I have to get up in 6 hours to get to the airport. I'm flying to Seattle tomorrow to meet Jen and her family. So more jet lag, more lack of sleep but other places to see! I'm not sure how it can get better than New York though...

I will hopefully put a selection of my pictures from New York in the next few days.

Write to you soon from the west coast!
Alex xx

Wow! Nice to see New York through the eyes of someone just going to visit! So bad about the Guggenheim - the outside of the building really is amazing, so that was bad luck. Maybe on way back through? Look forward to seeing your pics, have a great time in Seattle!
