The pacific northwest coast

March 24, 2008 - Portland, Oregon, United States

Hello lovely people!

Well, it's about time I let you know what I'm doing at the moment. I met my friends Jen and Nik on wednesday in Seattle, it was really nice to see familiar faces and they took me for a short but great tour of Seattle. We went up to the top of The Space Needle which is definitely the symbol of the city and because of that I really thought it would be much bigger. Nearby there was a really cool Science-Fiction museum combined with a music museum, Hall of Fame. Ofcourse they had a whole section just for grunge music, let's not forget that this is where it was born. Seattle seemed like a really cool, laid back city.

I'm now staying at Jen's parents' house and they have such a beautiful property with lots of woods around the house. They live near Portland in Oregon, I haven't really seen the city yet because they took me to explore the countryside and it is a very gorgeous state. It seems very similar to Canada: mountains, rivers, pine trees forests. It looks very much like Scotland in some parts and the cost is exactly how I like it: dramatic and wild.

Jen and her family are absolutely amazing with me. Americans are the most welcoming people I have ever met. So far, the two families I have visited have really made such an effort to make me feel like if I was at home. They really love their country and it seems like they are very happy to have visitors. Also I think my french cooking skills help ;) Anyway I'm very lucky to have met those people and I have a feeling this is not finished!

I have also been taken to see shops, supermarkets, even a cinema with its greasy popcorn! The supermarkets are really great, this country is so switched on with food, could you believe that? But I suppose in the center of the USA it would be different... The States are definitely the country of extremes.

Ok, I should mention some not so good things cause you are going to think I have been brain washed ;) Starbucks is everywhere, but when I say everywhere, it is really everywhere! Even in some supermarkets, you can get a Starbucks coffee. Lots of Americans don't like walking, that is something we hear a lot: you know we only have drive thru for McDonald's in Europe, well here they have also a drive thru for Starbucks, one for the pharmacy, one for the ATM... This is really strange to see that to be honest, so different from Europe. Different doesn't mean bad but I just think it is maybe a bit too much, no?

Well, apart from those two things, everything else is great so far! And no I haven't been brain washed ;) promise!

We are off to Idaho tomorrow, something like 10 houres drive :O My first American road trip! No internet over there, we are back on friday. Untill then this will be quiet here on this blog but I have put lots of pictures, you can find them in the pictures section. Enjoy!
