Argentinien: El Chalten & Fitz Roy

El Chaltén is a tiny town at the base of the spectacular Fitz Roy Mountain Range.  It´s famous amongst rock climbers but the hiking is also fantastic.  The peaks (torres) of the Fitz Roy are frequently hidden by low cloud giving it the nickname the smoking mountain.  Christmas Eve was incredibly windy but sunny so I hiked up to Laguna del los Tres.  After a couple of hours, I reached the Poincenot hut at the base of the last hour climb.  I could hear Sam from the hut....

El Bolson, Esquel, Trevelin and Ruta 40
December 27, 2009 - El Chaltén, Argentina
I arrived in El Bolson on market day with a hangover and headed straight for the food stalls.  Then I sat in the park eating a broccoli and cheese pie and drinking rasperry juice.  El Bolson is a cool little town at the base of a distinctive, rocky mountain range.  After lunch, I caught the local bus to Lago Puelo, another pretty but windy lake, where I spent the afternoon relaxing in the sun.  That night I met an Argentinian guy who recommended that I hike to Cajon de Azul while in El...

El Chalten
October 19, 2009 - El Chaltén, Argentina
El Chalten is a very tiny town. Basiclly, the only reason to go there is a trek through the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (North side). As we already had the tent, and purchased everything else we needed for camping while in in Buenos Aires (camping stove etc).... we were set.  It is free to camp in the national park as long as you stick to their allocated sites.  So after arriving and talking to the local Rangers (who gave us all the information we needed for the walk) we...

4) El Chaltén - Trekking heaven!
April 21, 2009 - El Chaltén, Argentina
Our next stop was another weird little place in the middle of the mountains. El Chalten is a trekking paradise. There are lots of walks to do to get a view of the spectacular Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Apart from climing the mountains however, there is nothing else to do in that remote little village. Even more than in Calafate, the weather is unpredictable here. Unfortunately, the weather just changed when we arrived and wind, clouds and rain welcomed us. Due to the unpleasant weather...
