Bhutan 5: Bumthang
April 10, 2011 - Jakar, Bumthang, Bhutan
The morning after my last update, we took the (probably 8 hour) 9 and a half hour bus journey from Punakha to Bumthang, in the centre of the country. It worked out really well, as Phuntsho, who's been helping organise our trip, happened to be travelling from Thimphu on the same bus, so we met him for the journey. The journey was delayed by two road blocks due to works, and involved sitting through hour upon hour of Bhutanese pop music (which is universally awful), with the odd bit of Aqua or...

Bhutan 4: Hikes & Extra Heat
April 6, 2011 - Punakha, Bhutan
Hi all We've spent the last few days in Punakha, a small town two and a half hours away from the capital Thimphu, which is much warmer than Thimphu, but doesn't have all that much to offer. Since my last update, last Saturday we went on an epic 9-hour hike over the mountains around Thimphu. We started at the Radio Tower at the edge of the city, then hiked up to the small village of Phajoding - only accessible by hike, it seems pretty medieval, until you see the electrical cables branching...

Bhutan 3: last few days in Thimphu
April 1, 2011 - Thimphu, Bhutan
Our second week in Thimphu has been great. The best things in the hospital have been getting to do lots of practical things in theatre. On Thursday, we started the morning by seeing a skin graft and some spinal surgery, then we debrided some nasty scald wounds, just us and the scrub nurse - not too difficult, needed a couple of sutures at the bleeding points. Next up was a skin graft, which Dr Tashi took (a little thin, it seemed to me), and Tom & I sutured in place over the skin wound in...

Bhutan 2: Shrines, Spicy Peanuts and Space 34
March 28, 2011 - Thimphu, Bhutan
Hi all I've now been in Bhutan for just over a week, and have got up to a fairly varied bunch of things. It'll be another fairly brief one now, but I've also uploaded a few photos of my time here so far, so please do check them out! Well, since the last update, I've spent a fair amount of time in the hospital and eaten a LOT of food. Food is ridiculously cheap here, and there is a reasonably varied selection. I've eaten reasonably good pizza, great Indian food, nice & simple Bhutanese food,...

Bhutan: Land of the Peaceful Dragon
March 23, 2011 - Thimphu, Bhutan
Short update this one - internet definitely present in Bhutan, but not the easiest. Since the video update, I spent my last day in Bangkok, which was a real eye-opener - the grand palace has more gold and precious gems than I knew existed in the world, and the temple of the reclining Bhuddha was also pretty impressive. In the evening I met Tom, my companion for the Bhutan leg, at the airport. Wanting to save some cash, I took public transport, but this meant I had to leave at 9 for a 5am...
