Potosi (Silver Mines in the Heavens.... of HELL)
July 17, 2009 - Potosí, Bolivia
Hi Everyone. It has been a little while since we managed to update the blog, but here we go. Almost two weeks ago...... (in a galaxy far far away), two Ozzies finally left Sucre on a Friday and took a 4 hour bus further up to the Bolivian Highlands to the town of Potosi (elevation 4300m). This town was founded 450 years ago after the spanish discovered Silver on the mountain (which peaks at 4700m). Its got an interesting history, as the spanish quickly started mining operations (using slaves...

18) Potosi, Bolivia
June 8, 2009 - Potosí, Bolivia
We arrived in Potosi around 2:30am after experiencing our first Bolivian bus journey - It was quite an experience with the bus lurching from left to right for 3 hours as it swung around the hairpin bends, luckily it was pitch dark outside and we couldn't see the rough gravel roads and steep mountain drops outside. Bolivia or bust...
October 4, 2008 - Potosí, Bolivia
We've spent the last 6 days in Bolivia visiting 3 different places so far. First stop was Tupiza where we had an easy day to acclimatise to the higher altitude.  Then it was on to Uyuni which is very close to the Bolivian salt flats, which is the largest salt lake in the world and stretches for as far as the eye can see (c3,500sq km). We took a jeep tour onto the salt lake and saw a hotel contructed entirely from salt blocks (no longer used because of sanitation problems!) and had a picnic...
