If you were stranded on a desert island....
July 30, 2008 - Gaborone, Botswana
Given all the time we are spending together and the fact that you can only talk about HIV/AIDS so many hours a day, Travis has taken the lead on asking an assortment of random questions.  Here are the top 5 – in case you’re ever on a long car drive and run out of convo: - If you had a talk show, who would be your first interview? (Peter’s answer: Bin Laden) - If you were stranded on a desert island and could only eat one food, what would it be? (Travis’ answer: Thanksgiving) - If you...

Poker, baboons, and meals we miss
July 27, 2008 - Gaborone, Botswana
The food situation has been interesting.  We have come up with three pretty good meals from our meager counter-top oven, but we’ve eaten out three of the last four nights.  Entertainment is also a little hard to come by.  On Friday night, we sat around, drank beer, and played cards.  Travis taught us the game “three card” which Erin quickly dominated.  Jordan did a magic trick that didn’t work and Peter lost a bet that required him to bring in the bath mat off the clothesline. ...

Meeting UB's new faculty!
July 24, 2008 - Gaborone, Botswana
Yesterday was ourfirst day of meetings in Gaborone.  The 4of us had planned to reconvene for lunch at the main mall, but all we couldfind for food was KFC, Chickin Lickin, the Hungry Lion and equally greasy fastfood joints.  So, we tried to walk to arestaurant, but didn’t have good directions and eventually ended up at theUniversity of Botswana.  Turns out, itwas freshman orientation day, so there were older students helping the youngerones find their way around.  So, I askeda guy if...

Two of the Big Five
July 21, 2008 - Gaborone, Botswana
Hi!  We hope you had a fun weekend!  On Saturday, we went on a 2.5-hour drive in the Mokolidi Game Reserve, just south of Gaborone (aka “Gabs).  We saw tons of animals, including two – elephant and rhino – out of Africa’s famous Big 5. (We’re hoping to fill in the remaining 3 during our trip to Chobe Park in early August).  The 3 rhinos were especially amazing – they were huge!     Today is President’s Day in Botswana.  Although people in Botswana are having a lot of fun...

Jo'burg and Gabs
July 1, 2008 - Gaborone, Botswana
Woke up early on Saturday to head to the mall to use the internet because free hostel internet still not working! On shuttle to mall got chatting to Korean chap called Kay. He's a bit of a pro traveler as sounds like he's been to most places in the world. He's brought his newly married wife along this time. When I got back to the Hostel watched some TV and read my book. Got chatting to some English lads from Bristol Uni who were over on holiday for a couple of weeks. Headed to bed about...
