Really good pastries and fashion crises.
May 21, 2013 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
The morning we left Saigon we had to be up really early. I have to say, Saigon is quite pleasant at 6 am. It's cool and quiet and we enjoyed mooching past the badminton players in the park on our way to breakfast. We found the best brekkie we've had since we've been away! Real coffee and real pastries! Before we went away we did our malaria research and found that anti malarials weren't advised in any of the places we were going to as they were all low risk. However, having been bitten around...

Phnom Penh - Cultured, or vultures?
February 12, 2012 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
A day of looking at death. We visited Tuol Sleng, a site where people had been captured and tortured by the Khmer Rouge and followed this up by going to one of the killing fields, Choeung Ek. I was amazed at how beautiful the killing field was - trees, flowers, lots of lush greenery and a lake. And next door there was a school where one could hear the children singing and playing. But there was no getting away from reality. We could see bones and scraps of clothing on the earth around us....

Cambodia Capital : Phnom Pehn
January 26, 2012 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
After a fully occupied bus journey (see photo!) from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, we arrived, and wrangled a tuk tuk journey for $5 to take us to Europe guesthouse, which is no.2 on the guesthouse and b&b rating on trip advisor! At $17 a night in a double a/c room, we were laughing! 3rd floor, no windows which is a good thing because no traffic noise! We checked in, and then went for a wander along the streets. We hooked up with a lass called Ulrike, who is german-swiss, and we went for...

Remember – It’s not Greyhound
January 21, 2012 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Ok night bus … all board … wait … this isn’t the big massive comfy bus we paid for, it’s a mini bus with no a/c and full of swedes … Ok, they’re dropping us all off at the big bus, ok, now all aboard, sat in nice big bus seats that go back 45’ so a snooze is partially possible! We doze on and off until the bus stops in Phomn Pehn in the wee morning hours, and we all have to get out, as this nice bus terminates here (we weren’t informed of that but oh well). We stand guard...

Slumming it in Phnom Penh
April 27, 2011 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
On our final evening in Phnom Penh I sat in a big chair in the famous and sumptuous Elephant Bar of the Raffles Grand Hotel, sipping my Planter's Punch (a fruity cocktail of spiced Rum, pineapple, orange and mango juice) and crunching on complimentary bar snacks, listening to live Jazz piano with Mona and Dan, surrounded by expensively dressed beautiful people, and for the millionth time pondered on how I came to be here. I had already decided by the end of my first drink that there was...
