Bolivia to Chile
November 1, 2010 - Calama, Chile
Mon 1st NovOur "hotel" was 4 hrs from nearest village so was wonderfully isolated in the middle of the desert with only short wave radio for communication and solar power.  This 3rd day of travelling southwards across the desert to the bottom of Bolivia was spectacular as hopefully can be seen from the pics; beautiful lakes coloured by the minerals in the rocks; dusty tracks between huge volcanoes, fumeroles, hot springs and geysers.  It just kept getting better and better. We had to speed...

Sand, sand, sand, salt, sand, rocks, geysers
January 14, 2009 - Calama, Chile
We've just left San Pedro de Atacama and are spending the night in a dodgy hotel in Calama, Chile. The world’s deepest open-pit copper mine sits just outside of town so it's a mining town thu and thu.....not much to report except while killing time last Sunday before our bus I saw the biggest lineup for of women waiting to visit their men in jail ever! San Pedro de Attacama
May 28, 2008 - Calama, Chile
After Valparaiso we high tailed it north a fair distance (25 hour bus journey or so) to the attacama desert and to the oasis town of san pedro de attacama which lies at a height of 2400 metres above sea level (so it takes a day or so to get used fully to the altitude). The town itself is fairly small and very touristy but well worth a visit and there is alot to see and do in or around it. It lies just below an extinct volcano called Licanbur and near the argentinian and bolivian borders. The...
