Multiple Identities
November 13, 2008 - Kowloon, China
My understanding of Hong Kong is constantly changing.  While this is partly the result of my continued exploration of the city, it is more likely attributable to what I have learned from listening.  My students reveal much about Hong Kong in what they say, or do not say.  For example, today in my Debating with Confidence class students argued whether Hong Kong should have returned to mainland China.  In the course of this debate, I learned some interesting facts about Hong Kongers. ...

Election Day
November 5, 2008 - Kowloon, China
On November 5, 2008, I had of my best days in Hong Kong.  It was special both because I watched Barack Obama become the first African American President elect of the United States, and because I went to high tea at The Peninsula hotel.  To begin the day, I joined the other English Teaching Assistants for an early morning election viewing party/brunch.  While the results came in, students and staff wandered past our screening room and peered with interest at the ten or so Americans...

Lessons in Humility
October 28, 2008 - Kowloon, China

Another 30 degrees Celcius Day
October 21, 2008 - Kowloon, China
This past week has been crazy.  For the first time on a Saturday, I did not explore the city.  I stayed in my office and worked on an application for next year.  It actually felt rather good, as running away from responsibilities always seems to catch up with you.  I did however attend a show by Tom Cotter, an up and coming US comedian who made the long flight to Hong Kong for the 2nd Annual HK International Comedy Festival.  Apparently, the venue where I saw Mr. Cotter is the only...

Two Months and Counting
October 7, 2008 - Kowloon, China
The past week presented me with the opportunity to explore Hong Kong’s surrounding islands.  This was due to both the numerous public holidays in October and the ease with which you can travel to the outlying islands.  Wednesday October 1, was National Day, as Hong Kongers celebrated the eleventh anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese possession.  The celebration was widespread, with Chinese and Hong Kong flags flying everywhere from the mast of small shipping boats, to the roofs...
