Leshan and Mount Emei
July 25, 2009 - Lhasa, China
Following on from our previous post, here is a more detailed account of what we have been up to over the last few days. On Tuesday we took a bus to Leshan, located 2.5 hours south-west of Chengdu.  Leshan is known for its Giant Buddha statue, a 71 meter tall stone Maitreya Buddha carved into a cliff overlooking the confluence of two rivers.  There are numerous temples and pavilions on the surrounding hillside, as well as a large park containing dozens of replica Buddha statues from all...

April 20, 2009 - Lhasa, China
The train ride from Xining to Lhasa took 26h and we passed salt lakes on 3200m, a Tibetan family (mum, dad and kids!!) on a motorbike chasing there Yak flock and watched an amazing sunrise over the beautiful Tibetan plateau. Road Trip!

The Tibetans are generally really nice (everyone wants to say hello to us and then invariably laughing when we reply), except for one guy who said that David has a long nose. David's ego is still recovering :-P We also met...

Same same, but different!
February 27, 2008 - Lhasa, China
Greetings from Lhasa :-) So, we made it. Yay. Lhasa is more like China than we expected, but there's enough of a difference to make us feel like we're in a different place. Tibetans like colours - everything is bright and cheery - juxtaposed against the rocky, snowy, mountainous backdrop. The 36 hour train trip is not to be repeated, although being forced to do nothing for a day and a half meant we could cope with the altitude a bit better - the highest point on the trip was 5180m! There...
