October 8, 2011 - Xian, China

Stage one
August 24, 2011 - Xian, China
Freshlegs lasted for the thirty kilometres on the flat getting out of Xian. Expecting to get a complete and utter pasting from Vickery the King of the Mountains, he is well and truly broken in many senses of the word. After laughing and joking the evening before about having enough food to fuel him to Scotland, Vickery made a decent dent into the food supplies before even reaching the hills. He was also enjoying taunting me about the epic nature of the mountains we would be tackling and the...

August 19, 2011 - Xian, China
So as is standard, none of the top quality foreigner friendly hotels have working internet. In summary the rest of the route is mountains, and then MOUNTAINS! I am now in my fourth province of China having cycled through Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and recently arriving in Shanxi (no, not a typo, these two are distinctly (to the Chinese)...

Update 6: Hokery Pokery, Nurses, and Duck
February 27, 2011 - Xian, China
My second to last week in Xi'an has been pretty relaxed, but still very enjoyable. Can't believe I'm leaving on Friday, it's really flown by, and I've had such a fantastic time. Tuesday 22nd Feb Bizarre experience on the way to the hospital as Jingle Bells floated over from the local school. After ward round, I got put with the nurses, and ended up being with them for the whole day. It had high points and low points. It was interesting to watch a few cannulations, see how it differed from...

Update 5: History, Hotpots and Iatrogenic Holes
February 21, 2011 - Xian, China
Friday 18th February Was late for the morning meeting (though was great to catch up with Connie on the phone!), so Dr Zhong got me to hide in the office until the ward round! Saw lots of flexible nasoendoscopies in clinic, and even more spitting - the nature of the clinic meant that there was even a dedicated 'spitoon' in the corner (see photo from the Shaanxi History Museum, and imagine it full). Interesting nonetheless, and followed by amazing mutton and carrot jiao ze (dumplings) - a...
