August 3, 2010 - Cartagena, Colombia
Sunday, 18th July - Cusco, Peru - Cartagena, Colombia Another day, another country. Colombia will be my 16th country of my trip. I fly from Cusco to Lima, then wait a couple of hours and catch another flight to Cartagena, Colombia. I left Cusco at 7am and arrive in Cartagena at 3pm. I took a taxi to El Viajero hostel in the old part of town. Cartagena is gorgeous. A wall was built to protect the town from pirates, most notably after the 'pirate' Francis Drake, attacked the town in the...

Sailing to Colombia
February 27, 2010 - Cartagena, Colombia
I have just arrived in Cartagena, Colombia´s romantic city on the carribean coast.  After five days on deck, I can still feel the waves and as a result feel a bit ill... oh well. Leaving the sweltering heat of Panama City, I made for the amazingly beautiful islands of San Blas, inhabited only by the Kuna, an indigenous people independent from Panamanian governance.  The islands were incredible and left only sunbathing and eating lobster as pursuits. After a weekend spent with the Kuna,...

42) Cartagena & the curios Volcan del Totumo
September 30, 2009 - Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena is a colonial port town on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, once a busy trading port, specially for precious metals and later on the arrival place for most slaves coming to South America, you can see still the archway they had to walk through when they first stepped from the ships and the square where the slaves were paraded and sold. Cartagena was also a favorite for pirates who made many raids on the rich town, and magnificent fortresses were built around the bays to defend the...

We arrived in Cartagena around 6pm at night so found a very very basic hostel quick as it was dark and was just about to pore down with rain.  The place pretty much closed up around 8pm so was a bit hard to find a decent dinner still open??? (this is a big city as well).  The town itself really looks like it should be in Europe.  There are a lot of different colored buildings with little balconies on them.  The place does not have the same vibe as Europe but was still worth a quick...
