Sloth Crossings and Nocturnal Frog Antics
June 18, 2015 - Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
10. We are on day 3 of the Starfish Quest. Getting closer. Last night we made it to the Caribbean side of the country, to the town of Limon. Today we drove to Puerto Viejo, close to the Panama border. Tomorrow we will get a shuttle to cross. Last night when we got to the Maribu Caribe it was dark, and we fell into bed. The horse/waterfall tour went until 2 and then we drove from one coast to the other. We are staying in round white yurt-shaped buildings with palm roofs. As we walked to our...

Einstein-eco the Sloth & Run for the Barn Rosa
June 17, 2015 - Dominical, Costa Rica
9. Starfish Quest, day 2. Today, we drove from the Pacific coast to the Carribbean. But first we rode horses to the Naucaya Falls. We woke to see the sloth lounging in the tree outside our bedroom window. It's one of those highlights you hope for but can't guarantee will happen. We decided to name him Einstein-eco. It just seemed to suit him. Einstein in his tree. From Jupiter House we drove, about eight minutes, to the Naucaya Falls entrance, where we began our horsebackriding tour to the...

Quest Starfish Begins and Best Plane Food Ever
June 16, 2015 - Dominical, Costa Rica
8. The kid wanted to snorkel in Bocas del Toro, an archipelago in Panama. One beach in particular had ignited a small obsession, Playa de las Estrellas, starfish beach. We decided to make our way there for the weekend. How difficult could it be to follow through on a sweet little starfish quest... afterall, we have a car. After minimal research, we discovered it won't be a straight shot to the starfish lovelies. Oh, no. First of all, can't take the car over that border. Even a Tico car...

Pillow Planning and Sleeping Cats
June 15, 2015 - Jacó, Costa Rica
7. Tomorrow we will have been in Costa Rica for exactly one week, feels much longer because we've packed a lot in. Staying for a week in Corteza del Sol was a great place to catch our breath and find out more about the country from within. Today was a pillow planning day, since we need a place to sleep tomorrow. Seems fitting that we were surrounded by sleeping cats. Sometimes we leave booking until the last minute (obviously) but in the end it always pieces togeher. This morning we booked...

Macaws, Monos, and a Two-toed Sloth
June 14, 2015 - Puntarenas, Costa Rica
6. Still in search of some native wildlife, we decided to be more pragmatic. Even though it was difficult to find and we had to pass the verbal police polygraph at a roadblock, we found the Macaw Santuary at El Manantial, nested in the secluded rolling sugarcane fields north of Puntarenas. What a gem this place was. When we pulled up to the gate it was chained shut with a small sign that said, "Abierto." Someone did come to let us in, but we were the only ones there for the entire morning....
