From Cartagena to La Hesperia
March 12, 2010 - Quito, Ecuador
After the sailing trip, and after having regained the use of my legs, I enjoyed the sights and sounds of Cartagena.  The Caribbean coast of Colombia really is beautiful yet, as much as I wanted to stay, I had to make my way down south.  Catching an overnight and somewhat over-airconditioned bus to San Gil, I  arrived in the small regional town in the early morning.  The town was great as it seemed to me the most authentic example of Colombian living. While tourism is not completely...

38) Climbing Cotopaxi Volcano, Equador
September 6, 2009 - Quito, Ecuador
Who in their right mind would fork out several hundred dollars for the privilege of climbing a volcano in the middle of the night, in Arctic conditions & to a height where you can barely breath? Well, that's what we decided to do. Volcanologists and tourists alike flock here in their hundreds to climb, investigate and look in awe at the 'Valley of the Volcanoes'. The jewel in the crown is Cotopaxi, a stratovolcano 75 kilometres south of Quito, and this is the beast we had our ambitious eyes...

Getting to Colombia (Longest Bus Trip in SA)
September 10, 2009 - Quito, Ecuador
After 2 nights in Mancora (Peru), where we chilled out on the beach, we hopped on a 3pm bus aimed for Quito (Equador).... and started one of the longest journeys (for a bus ride) of our lives. We had to travel to the border of Peru (3 hours north at a town called Huaquillas), get our stamps on either side of the border (which were miles away from each other). We then changed buses to continue on to Equadors capital of Quito (overnight bus).  We are greatful we had booked with one...

37) Quito & around, Ecuador
September 1, 2009 - Quito, Ecuador
After spending a few days in Banos, the spa town in the east of the country with some impressive waterfalls, we moved on towards Quito with a stop in Quilotoa. Quilotoa is an old crater with a beautiful emerald lake inside. We arrived in the little village after dusk after another hair-raising bus ride and stayed in a hostel which is located only 10 meters from the crater rim. The next morning we tried to catch the sunrise over the crater, but unfortunately the sun was hidden behind the...

Galapagos - Santa Cruz
June 14, 2009 - Quito, Ecuador
Our arrival in Santa Cruz (the most populated island in the Galapagos) coincided with some Equadorian local elections.  This is relevant because, during the weekend of elections, they ban all alcohol sales, but as our guide said, there is always a way round these things.  This mostly consisted of hiding our beers under the table in the restaurant, so any passing policemen wouldn't feel the need to come in and confiscate them, and solemly promising the sales assistant in the supermarket...
