Flores and Tikal, Guatemala
September 17, 2010 - Flores, Guatemala
Thursday, 9th September - Flores, Guatemala There is a direct bus from Rio Dulce to Flores in the north of Guatemala, the stopping off point for visits to Tikal, a Mayan historical site. Four of us are on our way there today. We catch the 9.30am bus, which is running a bit late and is packed. We have to stand, but let's hope it is not for the full 4 hour journey. The bus is not quite a 'chicken' bus but it is very basic. Whole families squeeze themselves onto 2 seats with luggage and kids on...

It turns out (due to lack of research before we got here) that Flores is a tiny little thing! A small island in the middle of a lake in the Peten state of Guatemala. It literally takes 15mins to walk around the whole island but it is very nice and reminiscent of a coastal mediterranean town. Our hotel is cheap and overlooks the lake which is good because at least it gets a bit of breeze. I'm not sure how hot it gets at midday but our 'Tikal Ruins' guide said it had hit 45 degrees recently. It...

Livingston - Rio Dulce - Flores - Tikal
July 2, 2009 - Flores, Guatemala
We realise there is a lot lumped in here but we were moving pretty fast!  The next stop on our quick tour of Guatamala was Rio Dulce, reached by a boat ride up the river from Livingston.  It is a popular haven for yachties, esp during hurricane season, as it is considered to be one of the safest ports in a storm in the Carribbean.  It was a very pleasant if crowded boat ride and even some site seeing along the way, including some randon hot spring on the edge of the river, far too hot for...

Two Tours...Semuc Champey and Tikal
February 26, 2009 - Flores, Guatemala
I am sat in a hotel in Flores, a small town on an island in a lake, in north Guatemala. We got here yesterday after an eight hour bus journey from Lanquin, my previous stop. I think I wrote last on my first day in Lanquin after just getting there...the hostel there, El Retiro, turned out to be amazing, and I soon found out that several guys there were in their third week there. It has a party atmosphere  akin to freshers week at uni, with an all you can eat themed buffet every night...
