Last Day in El Triunfo
August 3, 2011 - Gualán, Guatemala
Tonight I leave for Antigua, another part of Guatemala for a day trip before I leave for the USA. This is so bittersweet, because I will miss the people here but also really want to see my family at home. So, I began today by writing cards to everyone. Just as I was about to take a nap, the truck of rocks came for us and the Director and I had to leave immediately to see about them. Here, the roads are unpaved. There are gaping holes in a lot of places; therefore the organization paid to...

Yesterday, I went with the Director to the technical college to pay for one of our program participants tuition and fees. She gave us a tour of the school, and the first thing that I noticed was that there were not girls. She finally took us to the classroom where the girls were, and it was a cosmotology course. WTH?! My First Horse Ride
July 31, 2011 - Gualán, Guatemala
I woke up to the wonderful songs from the birds, rustling of the trees, and the sound of a calm stream. Ahhhh...this is the life! As I promised myself, I read. The book goes into a lot of detail about the 2000 elections with George W. Bush Junior, Al Gore, and...

Living Off the Land
July 30, 2011 - Gualán, Guatemala
The Director wanted to get away, so we packed up the truck and invited a few people to her farm for an overnight trip. I have been to the far many times, but always for short visits. On the ride there, we encountered mushy ground and the car got stuck. The guys hopped out the truck and immediately, they began fetching rocks and boulders to help level the ground. Shortly thereafter, the girls helped. Rosita had walked to the stream to gather larger rocks and the children made an assembly line...

Body Image
July 28, 2011 - Gualán, Guatemala
Now that I am drawing nearer to taking my GRE exam for grad school, I feel stressed most of the time. Oftentimes, I want to retreat to easier options out of fear that my dream school and career doesn't come true. But my special someone believed in me and encouraged me to press on to my goals. I began work today a little preoccupied about my future. However, I set clear goals that I wanted to accomplish in the office today...and...I got them done! The organization is all set up on the...
