Welcome to Livingston or Labuga in Garifuna
June 25, 2011 - Lívingston, Guatemala
So, this morning I left to set out for Livingston in hopes of finally meeting the people of African descent here in Guatemala. Their culture is called Garifuna, and they arrived in Guatemala from a slave ship from Africa. I hoped that I would be well received and learn a lot about the people. By 10:30am, I was in Livingston. I forgot my notebook which had the Director's number and my hotel information, but I had to keep pushing. I tried to recount the directions to the hotel from memory. So,...

Livingston, yeah man!

Roatan to Guatamala
July 1, 2009 - Lívingston, Guatemala
We left Roatan on the early morning ferry for what was expected to be another very long bus day making our way to the border and into Guatamala.  It took a boat and 3 buses to bring us to Omoa which is a small coastal town about 70 miles from the Frontera.  We had already planned to spend the night here which turned out to be fortuitous as we arrived to find a sinister military presence and were told that the border was closed.  For those of you who missed it, there was a military coup...
