Leaving Calcutta

A quick entry before I go to pack. Very sad to leave and hoping that there will be opportunity to return - for me, it has been an experience close to the Camino walk that I did last year - an opportunity to meet so many different people from all over the world, an opportunity to walk with different life experiences - and the same lessons to be learnt - about connecting to the earth, about the rhythm of life and death, about not judging others, about what really counts in life. Last Days in Calcutta

I can't believe that i have almost come to an end of the time in Calcutta - it seems only yesterday that I arrived. Yesterday - a good day (as they all are!!!) - after a pretty indifferent start with a celebration of the Eucharist in which the priest's homily went on for half an hour and the Mass itself didn't end until 7.30am (usually ends well before breakfast at 7.00am). St Mary's School and Kalighat

A really good day today - didn't write last night because I was so tired (and lazy!) - but today has been very relaxed. Actually, I don't know why I was tired yesterday because it was a very easy day - when I arrived at Shanti Dan, one of the Sisters asked me to help her check accounts on the computer. Spanish Steps

I seem to be surrounded by Spaniards and tonight went to the Spanish Mass - so 'Spanish Steps' seemed an appropriate title! No 6.00am Mass this morning because we had planned to go to the evening mass in Spanish - so there was a blissful (and much needed) extra hour's sleep before heading down to the volunteers' breakfast, ready to check the board for the list of names of volunteers who had been selected (by lottery) to go to 'the washing'. Saturday night

SO tired after another very satisfying but long day - the usual 5.30am walk to the Mother House for Mass at 6.00am, then Shanti Dan, lunch and Kaligat before heading back to the Mother House for the hour of prayer. The women at Shanti Dan were a bit more agitated today - one had died and the body was taken out while we were there - another lady is very sick and her family came - she's lying on a bed on the verandah with a fly net around her.
