Its just like a big chinatown.

Thus spake The Leader of the Opposition as we walked through Hong Kong on our first day, proving that you can't be brilliant all the time. She claims its a profound philosophical comment. Our 9 hr flight from Melbourne was a breeze thanks to Cathay Pacific's great in-flight entertainment. This system of choosing your own things from a choice of easily 50 films as well as TV shows, documentaries and 800 albums really is a travel revolution. Flights of 9 hours just whizz by. Unusually for us we...

Pongal Festival
January 16, 2010 - Chennai, India
We were warned that there was a festival on so the beach was crowded ... but we went anyway!!  They weren't kidding - the beach was heaving!  Apparently, the festival started Friday and several Indians went paddling, with some going in too far and getting into trouble so by the time we got there on Saturday, the police and authorities had erected a barricade to prevent anyone from dipping their toes.  The whole scene was a complete assault on our senses:  the colours, the smells, the...

January 17, 2010 - Chennai, India
Hi everyone... After a fraught couple of days, having been housebound by snow on Wednesday last week, we finally got to the airport hotel Thursday evening (thanks, Kevin!) and wandered across to T5 at Heathrow early the following morning.  Although the flight was some 30 minutes late leaving, we arrived just about on time - at 1 in the morning!  Immigration and passport control (not to mention swine flu control before you even get that far) is a bit hard to take at that time, after more...

High tea in Darjeeling
November 13, 2009 - Chennai, India
Thursday, 5th November 2009 WE leave Calcutta at 6am and have to cover up to 500km today. We had breakfast by the road. Our arrival anywhere with the truck usually causes a scene. Today we have fried eggs, toast, fruit juice and tea n coffee. It is quite amazing what we can manage to prepare in 30mins or so. After breakfast we head off but soon get caught in a traffic hold up. There is a level crossing and the traffic is just incredible. We think it might be road works as well, because it...

The saints of Calcutta
November 13, 2009 - Chennai, India
Saturday, 31st October I sleep quite well, considering i am on the floor. I am definitely gonna go for an upgrade in Calcutta. I am desperate for a good night's sleep. Myself, Fi and Sherrill head for a nice long leisurely breakfast. We look for internet cafe afterwards. I find the first internet cafe in India with Skype. Yipee. I phone home and speak to Mum, Andrew and Frankie boy. It's nice to speak to everyone at home. All sounds fine. I end up spending about 3 hours in internet cafe,...
