Day on the Ghats
January 12, 2010 - Varanasi, India
When I returned to the hotel yesterday morning, I was given a message that my new Australian friend Anne had managed to get an earlier flight - and would not be staying in Varanasi any longer! So I've spent yesterday and today happily wandering around by myself - much the best way to see any city, walking for hour after hour. Most of the day has been spent walking long the ghats, the steep stone steps that lead down to the edge of the Ganges. Each ghat has a different focus and feel - some...

Mother Ganga
January 11, 2010 - Varanasi, India
Haven't had the opportunity to write recently - now in Varanasi and staying at the Hotel Pradeep. Yes, there's hot water - and clean sheets and a towel and a tv set (though I haven't seen anything yet that has persuaded me to leave the set on). Have slept quite a bit - simply catching up on missed rest! Left Calcutta early Saturday morning. A couple of days beforehand, I had spoken to one of the taxi drivers about going to the airport - and since he assured me that the cost would be the...

Tues/wed 27th & 28th: Varanasi
October 28, 2009 - Varanasi, India
Tue 27th The most ancient sacred town in India for Hindus, Varanasi is on the Ganges. We had been warned that it would be dirty and full of touts and gained the impression that we might find it disappointing but for me it is the most interesting, special, bizarre and strangely picturesque place we have seen so far. Sure it is dirty, very polluted and busy (what's new!) but there seems to be a little more order to the chaos, the people sweeping the streets do a better job (not just...

Taj Mahal and Agra Railway Station: Mon 26th
October 27, 2009 - Varanasi, India
Taj Mahal: Mon 26th A 6am start for our visit to The Taj. Indeed it was every bit as beautiful and impressive as expected and then some. Spent a few hours wandering around watching the light change the colour of the marble with it's inlaid semi-precious stones. The grounds surrounding the stupendous mausoleum are vast and house a fine muslim temple facing Mecca and an identical building on the opposite side, just for the sake of symmetry. There is always a dusty haze wherever we have been...

Varanasi and leaving India!
May 20, 2009 - Varanasi, India
We finally made the journey to Varansi on the train which was an experience but just like everywhere else that we have visited in the country it was full of people doing their business in the street, people on the make, cows, rubbish and s**t everywhere. It seemed after a few days the culture shock and novelty of the hustle and bustle and screwing around on tut tuts had worn off and the whole way of life had just become a chore, completely draining if I am truthfull - not a trip of a...
