Earthquake
March 16, 2011 - Goshogawara, Japan
It’s now been several days since the earthquake, and I’m sitting at my desk just correcting papers and reading the news online as no students are in school today.  A three hour blackout was scheduled, but it ended up being canceled as people in this area were conserving energy so well.  Right now, the inconveniences here are certainly not dwelled upon as we’re all worried about those a few hours away from us.   The earthquake occurred Friday afternoon right after the start of 6th...

An Aomori Winter
January 20, 2011 - Goshogawara, Japan
I feel like I often write about the weather, which is the stereotypical topic that people discuss when they have nothing else to say. But I view my time here in terms of the weather; it’s more than just a conversation filler. Like every January I’ve spent here, the world outside my window is a winter wonderland. It snows too much for the side of the roads to blacken from car exhaust, so everything is pristine and white. Unlike the US, where roads are fully plowed and salted, here, the...

My Students
July 17, 2010 - Goshogawara, Japan
I haven’t really written much about my students recently, so I thought I’d update you all about life at my high school.  The first day of the school festival was really amazing.  My English club members are great, and we were able to get lots of people in to our room to read the posters, eat food, and make dream catchers.  Walking around seeing all the students relaxed and having fun was great.  The third year students sold delicious food and after seeing the rock band club groups...

Festival Season
July 14, 2010 - Goshogawara, Japan
It’s summer yet again – the third summer I’m seeing here, but thankfully not the last.  While teachers in the US are able to take a long vacation from school during summer, teachers in Japan work just as hard as they do during the rest of the year.  The school year in Japan starts in April and ends in March with three 3-week long vacations in winter, spring, and summer.  Right now is actually one of the busiest times as our school festival is coming up this weekend.  The school...

久しぶり It's been a long time!
March 25, 2010 - Goshogawara, Japan
It's been quite a while since I last wrote!  Another school year has just finished and a new one will begin in several weeks. I can’t believe that this is my second time witnessing all the changes that occur with the end of a school year. A few days ago the teacher transfer list was announced. For those that don’t know, Japanese schools work differently from American ones in that teachers do not choose where to work. (They are, however, able to make requests.) Each year teachers are...
