Last Post from Jordan
July 24, 2015 - Amman, Jordan
Thank you all for your comments and for reading my blog during this first stage of my gap year, I really appreciate it! Ramadan just ended with Eid Al-Fitr on the 17th, which is a holiday normally spent with family, so it made me a little homesick but it's nice to know people are thinking of me. We weren't in Amman for most of Eid but it was a huge celebration marking the first day of Shawwal (the month after Ramadan) and the end of fasting, and we had two days off school. When we got back to...

Already Halfway
July 12, 2015 - Amman, Jordan
As crazy as it seems, we're more than halfway through the program. It doesn't seem like we can have been here so long, but at the same time, we're definitely settled: our apartments feel like home, we're getting more confident with our Arabic, we've just taken our midterm at school, the vendors near the apartments know us, and we have a routine. We're as busy as ever, so this will be a long blog post, covering the last two weeks. Last Thursday (July 2nd), we had our second quiz at school,...

Don't worry, I'm alive! I've been so busy this past week and a half, but I finally have time to breathe and sort it all out to share it with you guys! Last Sunday (in Muslim countries the work and school week runs from Sunday to Thursday) we started classes at our language school. We met our new teachers: Ustadha...

Exploring and Apartments
June 20, 2015 - Amman, Jordan
It's been a very busy two days! Yesterday (Friday) we spent most of the day sightseeing in Amman. First we went to Ajloun Castle, which is on a hill overlooking the town of Ajloun, about an hour and a half north-west of Amman. It had a lot of cool history and it was really pretty. It's survived being sacked and two earthquakes and has been rebuilt and restored several times, but it was interesting because it all looked and felt so solid. And there were beautiful views of countryside and olive...

First Day in Amman
June 18, 2015 - Amman, Jordan
We're finally in Jordan! We're staying in a hotel right now for the first few days, before we move to our apartments. It's nice to have a chance to acclimate to everything else before we have to live on our own as well. It turns out we will have internet in the apartments, though, so I'll be able to keep in touch. We arrived at Amman Queen Alia International Airport at around 2 in the morning today. By the time we got through customs, found our bags (they all made it!) and drove to the hotel,...
