Different Setup
December 4, 2013 - Mombasa, Kenya
Getting used to the “rural-area-life”, I can now recount some events which surprised or astonished me. Eating outside, maybe during a walk, is not good. When my host-sister and I walked and I considered eating a Banana, she told me to wait until we are home, because people could give us “a bad eye” what can result in stomach-pain. When I walk somewhere, it’s likely to happen, that somebody calls my name from far, but I don’t know the person. It’s because I am the only white girl...

New Project
October 26, 2013 - Mombasa, Kenya
My six new colleagues were waiting for me since September but thanks to the Kenyan communication habits, I reported to work one week after I arrived. It’s a small Dispensary. It is meant to be a district hospital, but the required staff is not yet employed. They welcomed me warmly and are the friendliest co-workers one can wish for. I don’t have a lot of work to do. I’m just helping here and there, which is fine. I’m never bored because of the fun I have with my two best friends....

Life in Mlambeni
October 26, 2013 - Mombasa, Kenya
Mlambeni is a small small tiny place in the Wundanyi constituency. What I learned very fast is that people are more polite in this place. Let me say in rural places. Because there is no exposure to the “high life” in Mombasa or Nairobi and whites are rarely seen. Kids come and say “Mzungu, mzungu!” but it’s not rude. And they want to greet me all the time. Some look at their hands immediately after, to check if the colour has changed. The youth fears the saga of Illuminati. It...

My 4th Host-Family
October 26, 2013 - Mombasa, Kenya
Fearing to travel without legal documents, I left Mombasa in its usual heat and hectic and while sitting in a stuffed Matatu for more than five hours, I had time to prepare myself mentally for a new start. The landscape changed completely from dry and hot savannah to green high and cold mountains. The Matatu driver just dropped me off in the middle of nowhere. One of my four new host-sisters picked me and we climbed a steep path to reach home. It is a very simple but beautiful place. Small...

Leaving with fear
October 12, 2013 - Mombasa, Kenya
The last week in Mombasa was hectic. I rushed round to wish everyone well and to take some last pictures from special places. Because I knew this was going to be my last long-stay in Mombasa. I went on top of a big building to get an “aerial view” of Mombasa. It is a store. Surprisingly, they have a small Mosque on top, so that the staff can go for prayers. My first host-family was very sad, especially the kids. They gave me a sweet present. I’m going to miss them, although I’ve...
