November 15, 2013 - Lüderitz, Namibia
Friday, 15 November From Betta we headed South towards Aus, an oasis in this arid landscape.  Up until now the landscape had been beautiful with great rocky black outcrops to the East and the huge red dunes on the Western side, while we were travellimg South on grey green plains which were full of game.  This whole area is a nature reserve so gemsbok (oryx) as well as zebra and ostrich and all the smaller mammals, like mongoose and meerkats abound.  As we headed South the red dunes were...

Heading South
November 15, 2013 - Aus, Namibia
14 November (Thursday)We decided to visit the Sesriem Canyon as we had missed it the day before due to our car problems.   So back to the gate and again we had to pay for a permit (R60 per person and R10 for the car).  We drove the 4  and a half km and abruptly the road came to an end at what appeared to be a donga (an eroded channel in the ground).  However on getting out of the car and walking a little closer, it became obvious that this was no ordinary donga.  It is a huge canyon ...

Kalahari to Sossusvlei
November 15, 2013 - Aus, Namibia
11 November (Monday )We left Red Dunes camp and headed for Gochas.  As Farmer Piet had no card facilities, he had asked us to pay for our stay at his campsite by drawing money in this little town and paying it to ’Flip at the shop’.  ‘What shop?’ we asked.   We soon found out. Gochas has only one shop, and a garage and a bottle store, of course!  The ATM is in the shop, and we drew the last N$700 out of it!  So we were able to pay our bill to the very charming owner of the only...

November 13, 2013 - Sossusvlei, Namibia
7 and 8 November (Thursday and Friday)Firstly, an apology.  One or two mistakes crept into the last posting.Firstly, Kirri is a meerkat (a suricate), not a mongoose.  And secondly, Nossop is, of course on the Eastern side of the S African section of the Kalahari Transfrontier Park, so we travelled up the Eastern side of the Park. Now we were about to depart on the most beautiful and exciting drive of our trip.  We were to cross the dunes from East to West across the open arms of the...

Days 33 and 34
September 22, 2012 - Windhoek, Namibia
We travelled from Grootfontein to Otjiwarongo on the wonderful Namibian roads - such a pleasure after Zambian roads.  Realised that even the good Zambian roads are bad. In Otjiwarongo we had a delicious cup of coffee and cake at the German coffee shop there - and absolute must if you are ever in Otjiwarongo.  We had tea and cakes in the same shop on my birthday in 2010, and it is as good as we remembered it!  From Otjiwarongo we drove to Windhoek via Omaruru, which is a kind of Arts  and...
