August 18, 2013 - Wellington, New Zealand
My last day in Wellington was possibly the most exciting day of my entire trip so far...  I survived one of New Zealand's biggest ever earthquakes. Damn that sounds cool. I'd gone into town alone to do some shopping and had arranged to meet Jayne at 3:15 outside Bethan's school for a lift home. At 2.30 I was walking  underneath the corrugated iron roof of a mall entrance when the earth started moving a few feet from side to side and I thought the roof might fall on me. The roof was...

More food and more hot pools
August 18, 2013 - Taupo, New Zealand
At the risk of turning this travel blog into a food blog, the highlights of Taupo centred around top food. The tongario crossing is a famous volcano walk which is classed as one of the top ten walks in the world. Unfortunately for us, it was deemed too dangerous over the weekend we were in town because of bad weather. Our skydive was cancelled too :( It chucked it down for the two days we spent in Taupo and there was nothing to do except eat, drink and be merry. After a great night out, we...

Jumping off waterfalls and feasting
August 18, 2013 - Rotorua, New Zealand
From hot water beach we went on to Waitomo which is famous for its caves. The activity for today was "black water rafting": get undressed in the freezing cold and squeeze into a wet, slimy wet suit before spending two hours in pitch black caves and icy water. Awesome. Black water rafting is different because you each have your own raft which is essentially a rubber ring. You have to make sure you pick one that you can fit your bum through and then it's time to practise the hard part before...

A mouthful of sand
August 17, 2013 - Cape Reinga, New Zealand
After leaving Queenstown, I flew up to Auckland to begin my tour of the North Island. I started with a three day trip to the Bay of Islands which included a day trip to Cape Reinga which is the very northern tip of New Zealand. The cape was beautiful and is deemed a very spiritual place by the Maori people. They believe that whenever someone dies in New Zealand, their spirit comes to Cape Reinga before departing. It's also the point where two seas merge: the Tasmanian and the Pacific. You can...

Long live Queenie
August 9, 2013 - Queenstown, New Zealand
I stayed a whole week in Queenstown because it was awesome and I didn't want to ever leave. Ever. The night we arrived was a big one, as we went on the bar crawl the bus had arranged for us. The town is taken over by Australian skiers and snow boarders at the moment, who come out on the beer after a long day on the slopes (and often don't make it up again the next day). So everyone is in holiday mode and it's just really, really cool.  We kept bumping into the same people on nights out...
