Two weeks in Cusco - muchas gracias !!
August 3, 2010 - Cusco, Peru
Sunday, 4th July - Cusco, Peru I check out of my hostel, which was really noisy last night, so I was glad not to be staying there for two weeks. I checked into my new home, Hostal El Virrey, and unpacked my rucksack. Two weeks in one place...bliss!! This will be the longest I have spent anywhere in 10 months of travelling. The room is spotless and really comfortable. What a great choice. The staff seem really friendly too, which is nice. I have a lazy day, make some phone calls home,...

Bustling Bolivia
July 19, 2010 - Cusco, Peru
Thursday, 1st July - La Paz, Bolivia After a long day of hanging around airports, I arrive into La Paz on schedule. I have probably been hanging around for 12 hours or so today, but it sure beats a bus trip, a train trip and another bus trip and a border crossing from Argentina into Bolivia, which all in all, would take 30 odd hours.....and that's if everything went to schedule. So forking out a few hundred bucks on a flight was money well spent, I reckon. I stay at Hotel Rosario. I stayed...

Train Trip to Huancayo
June 11, 2010 - Huancayo, Peru
What an amazing experience! Would you believe 30 years ago we took the same train trip! Back then everything and everyone was allowed on the train and it ran daily. This time it’s just a tourist train and runs twice a month, so we were very lucky to be able to timetable it in. The FCCA Huancayo Train trip is not only famous for its fantastic scenery along it’s 332 km journey but it is the highest railway in the Americas and the second in the world! We started in Lima at sea...

Puno
June 8, 2010 - Puno, Peru
After a day spent trying to clean ourselves and our clothes (after the Inca trail) we hopped on a bus and headed for Lake Titicaca. The bus ride should have taken 8 hours but ended up closer to ten, despite the locals getting quite rowdy with the driver, stamping their feet and shouting 'vamos'! When we arrived we agreed to head to a hostel a tout was selling it seemed ok but the owner was quite insistent that we book a tour to the floating islands with them, so insistent that despite us...

Lima, Peru 7-10 June 2010
June 10, 2010 - Lima, Peru
We are staying in ‘Miraflores’, a district about 8 km south of Lima close to the coast. A common tourist area, it is a safer area to stay in with a high presence of police, the traffic is horrendous! There are only a few traffic lights – some with count downs for pedestrians crossing, but the congestion and total lack of rules, makes crossing a real hazard! They drive on the other side of the road, so we keep looking in the wrong direction! Horns are tooting constantly and cars...
