March 9, 2014 - Arequipa, Peru
We had a 10 hour bus journey to Arequipa. It was alright. We had to take an expensive bus, which we don't usually do. About 20 pounds each, which is unheard of for us. But there seemed to be no easy way around it. Anyway, the bus was incredibly smooth and very comfortable. And the loo was okay. We were going along some very bendy mountain roads and I liked the feel of the side to side movement. It made me sleep. Good job the loo had a grab rail in it though. I am glad I am not a bloke. How...

Si Bolivie m'était contée
November 16, 2011 - Arequipa, Peru

Arequipa city tour
October 11, 2010 - Arequipa, Peru
Mon 10th Interesting tour of the city but with a guide whose spanish accent was so heavy it was difficult to understand her. We saw the fields on the edge of the city, the volcanos ever present in the background.  Then viewed inside a highly decorated catholic church (Iglesia de la compania). On to the Andean Sanctuary Museum where we learned about the 500 year old frozen remains of a 12 year old girl who was sacrificed on the top of a 6000 metre volcano, Ampato. She was chosen and groomed...

Lima to Arequipa
October 10, 2010 - Arequipa, Peru
9th OctEnjoyed an interesting dinner in a fab seafood restaurant which was built out into the sea and being lashed on 3 sides by wind and waves.  Patio heaters kept us warm in the marquee-like restaurant.  I had never tried Ceviche, one of the famed dishes (raw fish marinated in lime juice and spices) or the national drink (pisco sour) so that had to be put right. Chose scallops, crab claws and sea bass for the ceviche which was nice in the marinade but I have to say that I would have...

Nightbus to Arequipa, Peru (3,000m/1.860miles)
September 16, 2010 - Arequipa, Peru
Sooo, here we go, the famous nightbus... Yes, its as terrible as it sounds! We board the ´comfortable nightbus´after a small dinner in town at around 10pm. It looks quite nice from the outside...but damn that smell! You can imagine - 40 people trying to sleep, sweating, shoes off...Need to say more?! Nightmare. And since we are 11 people - do the math! One has to share a row with a local. And that would have been me. Lovely. Thinking to myself ´not fun but as the Peruvians are generally...
