More Peruvian adventures
February 7, 2010 - Arequipa, Peru
Hola amigos. We are coming to you live from the warm and rocky cactus-town of Arequipa in southern Peru. Apparently we are television stars in Australia care of channel 7 news and a local natural disaster, so we decided to leave Cusco before our stardom got too out of hand. We thought that the best way to celebrate surviving our first trek would be to book in for another one! Before that however we made a few days' stopover in Puno to visit Lake Titicaca (loving that name!). Within an hour of...

Finally some green in the window
October 8, 2009 - Arequipa, Peru
Well it has only taken the best part of a week, but we have finally moved beyond the dry, lifeless desert that is South Peru. There are smal shrubs, blue skys and apparently gum trees. Go figure. Well I can't say that the trip to get here was the most plesent one I have ever had. 9 hours on an overnight bus, where every time the guy in front of me moved, I ended up with a bruise on my knees. Having said that our time in Ariquipa is the most entertaining yet. And also has the best...

Anti pan pipes
September 16, 2009 - Arequipa, Peru
It doesn't take long to get fed up with pan pipes. I've never been that wild about them anyway but now I am heartily sick of them.( Helene likes them though ) The problem here is that every time you go to a restaurant or a bar its the same story. A couple or three blokes will walk in, put on a poncho and a woolly hat and start playing. It wouldn't be so bad if they were any good, but they aren't. The guitarist plunks away randomly, the obligatory pan pipes tootle and the optional third...

The Great Macchu Picchu Rip-Off
September 13, 2009 - Arequipa, Peru
Its pretty much obligatory to come to Peru and to see Macchu Picchu. Its Peru's biggest tourist draw and prices are consequently extravagant. We thought about not going as it is such an expense, but we did go in the end. Its a shame that the whole Macchu Picchu circus is so openly and cynically exploitative as this side of it cast a shadow of annoyance on what is undoubtedly a fantastic place. The town of cusco is packed with people offering trips out to Macchu Picchu, all of them at very...

TOURISTE RECHERCHÉE PAR LA POLICE
September 11, 2009 - Arequipa, Peru
