Crossing Spain by Train
September 16, 2015 - Barcelona, Spain
The plan today was to cross Spain from Ronda in the south to Barcelona in the northeast. This would involve seven hours of travel including half an hour to change trains. Our train would not leave Ronda until 1:35pm so we had breakfast at the hotel and left our luggage with reception before going for a last stroll around town. Our primary target was the little bakery near the Duquesa du Parcent restaurant. We tried their filled baguettes before and we thought we should get some for the train...

Round the Ronda Ring
September 15, 2015 - Ronda, Spain
Well, we had to do it! You can't come to Spain and not go to a Plaza de Toros. The Plaza de Toros de Ronda dating from 1785 is supposed to have been the first specialised masonry bullring built. The ring has a museum attached and an audio tour so it was a chance of seeing some of the history. It was just a short step across the road from our hotel so after breakfast we walked across the road and circled around via the park and the cliffside walk. We had another look at the view and tried some...

Food for thought
September 14, 2015 - Ronda, Spain
Prue and Tom drove up to Ronda from their place near Estepona and met us at our hotel about 11am. After introductions we walked up to the Puerte Nuove and down to the cafe at La Mina where we sat with coffee and talked for a while. Discussions from Family History through Philosophy  to Physics occupied a long coffee break as they often do. Hunger got the better of us and we walked back up the hill and across to the Duquesa de Parcent for lunch. Tom and Prue had been given it as a...

A new look at Puente Nuevo
September 13, 2015 - Ronda, Spain
So when in Ronda you go and stare into the 120m deep chasm that divides the town. Oh, and marvel at the construction of such a bridge to span that chasm at the end of the 18th Century. Just moving the stone to the site must have been a huge undertaking, let alone piling them up into the arches. Apparently there were 50 workers who died during the construction and one can understand how that could happen. We ate breakfast at the hotel before venturing out for our walk. This time in Ronda we...

Round to Ronda ... again
September 12, 2015 - Ronda, Spain
It will be sad to leave the Casa Palacio Carmen but today we have to move on to Ronda. In some ways we have misgivings about returning to Ronda as it seemed a bit of a tourist thing and yet we look forward to seeing the bridge, visiting the cafe at La Mina just to sit in the gardens and to eat at the Duquesa again. We had plenty of time before our train so we took a leisurely breakfast in the garden. They put on a good choice of cheeses and cold meat as well as cereals and croissants and...
