Last Day at the Villa
July 24, 2018 - Priego de Córdoba, Spain
Will, Bex and Charlie left early and the rest of us had our usual extended and unchoreographed breakfast in the courtyard. David, Sarah and I decided to go into Priego de Cordoba, the nearest large town, about twenty minutes' drive away. It was quite busy, and although we found a spot to park near the town hall, when we deciphered the sign, we decided it said that we could only park there for about 15 minutes. So we drove on up the hill and found a vacant lot where we could pay to park for as...

July 23, 2018 - Priego de Córdoba, Spain
Before the rest of the family set off for Granada, Sarah, Lucie and I, who had decided not to go, had to say goodbye to Sam. He was going to explore Granada with the others, but drive from there to Malaga to catch his plane home. It was sad to see him go, especially as he had spent such a short time with us, but the time we  had was precious. Max and I stayed in Granada for three days in 2015, and had been twice (most recently last September) with our photography tour through the Alhambra so...

July 22, 2018 - Priego de Córdoba, Spain
Today's family expedition was to Antequera and we all went, in various cars and at various times. The exception was the Canadians who hadn't yet had a 'rest day' and decided to reacquaint themselves with swimming and reading; and Rachel did their washing! When Max and I did our first Torrox photo tour in 2015, Kevan took us up to the Alcazaba, the Moorish fort high on the hill on the edge of Antequera, but we only went into the courtyard where we had lunch and took the inevitable photos. I was...

Cortijo la Presa
July 21, 2018 - Priego de Córdoba, Spain
I haven't really described properly either the location of our villa, the Cortijo la Presa, or its spectacular surroundings. The villa is on the edge of Las Sierras Subbeticas Natural Park which my research tells me is a limestone plateau and part of the Beticas Mountain Range. It is of worldwide significance because of the abundance of ammonite fossils. It is also prolific in birdlife, including the griffin vulture - I wouldn't recognise one if I saw it, but Sam was quite excited when one...

Lake Iznajar
July 20, 2018 - Priego de Córdoba, Spain
The little town of Iznajar sits on top of a steep hill overlooking the Genil River valley. In the 1960s 200 hectares of land and 150,000 olive trees were submerged to create a reservoir, officially 'opened' by Franco in 1969, to supply drinking water and irrigation to local villages. So Iznajar became an inland town with extensive water views, no doubt greatly increasing its tourist potential. Lake Iznajar, as the reservoir is called, is about 30 km long, and almost immediately beneath the...
