Week II in Sandviken
July 18, 2011 - Sandviken, Sweden
Week II in Sandviken had us first going to the Wij Garden. This garden is unique in two ways. First, it is quite unusual for there to be a garden this far north. Second, it has as its centrepiece several outdoor garden ‘rooms’ designed to blend the structure of an indoor room with the elements of a garden. There was also an amazing rose garden and a fair bit of arts and crafts. We also spent an afternoon and evening with friends of Jenny and Kjell’s. We had a wonderful dinner in the...

Holy Crap
July 11, 2011 - Sandviken, Sweden
All this week Hofors (about 30 km away) is hosting the Swedish Kayaking Championships. So, we drove up there and watched a few races. I even bumped into a few old teammates – so that was fun. On the way back we stopped at an old chalk quarry that is closed down and has filled up with water. This place is amazing. It 500 metres long, 20-30 metres wide, and 25-30 metres deep. AND, it is surrounded by cliffs up to 20 metres high. The walls drop straight down into the water and then continue...

Well, this has been quite the week. It started quite slowly on Monday with us going to Gävle to apply for new Swedish passports and then we worked on getting some bikes ready for us to use while we are here. Tuesday was WAY more lively. First we rode our bikes to go blueberry picking, fishing, and swimming. Then when we got home we had a huge dinner on the back deck. In the evening Lena got to fulfil her wish of baking cinnamon buns with Jenny. The week continued like this with more...

Arriving in Sandviken
July 4, 2011 - Sandviken, Sweden
Yesterday we arrived in Sandviken at our good friends Kjell and Jenny's house. We are going to be spending the next three weeks here just relaxing in good company and enjoying what this region has to offer. We spent part of the day fixing some borrowed bikes so that we can get around this wonderful place more easily. Kjell and Jenny have three children that our kids already know and get along great with. I think they have really been looking forward to having some friends to play with.
