Where the wild things are
January 25, 2009 - Arusha, Tanzania
Just a quickie from Arusha before we head off to Mafia Island.  Safari this past week was incredible - saw the 'big 5' and then some.  Serengeti was unreal.  Camping in unfenced areas was pretty cool too as animals came into the camp and you could hear the lions.  We kept having to remind ourselves that we weren't in a zoo!  Hope to post more details on the safari soon......maybe :) Tonight we head to Dar Es Salaam and then off to the island for diving for the next few days.  We're...

Summit bagging - the first and only 5000+
January 19, 2009 - Arusha, Tanzania
Jambo! Getting on the internet has been a bit difficult (and costly) since we've been camping most of the time, but we're at the Outpost Lodge in Arusha where internet appears to be 'free'.  We're here one night and then off to safari for 5 days. We have a little bit of catch up to do so here goes: Our journey down was relatively (at least for me!) uneventful. London fog (ha ha) prevented us from leaving Heathrow on time so we ended up missing our flight to Kili.  We had to spend the day...

Malawi - The Warm Heart of Africa
July 19, 2008 - Arusha, Tanzania
Lilongwe Many people had raved to us about Malawi, the little country with the big lake, since we had arrived in Africa. In particular, they mentioned how friendly the people were, and we were not disappointed. From when we arrived at the border, the local money changers spent time trying to teach us a few basic phrases in Chechewa. It was a lovely welcome to Malawi, and the first of many wonderful interactions with the Malawian people. Our first night in Lilongwe, we went out with our Aussie...

Battle for the Females
January 24, 2008 - Arusha, Tanzania
Dave: Tangerie National Park After our breakfast at the Country Lodge we headed back through Arusha on our way to the next game drive desitination. We needed to play another round of ATM roulette (you never knew if it would work or not) in town to settle our balance at Victoria Expeditions. Our second day of safari was spent at Tangerie National Park. The higlight of this game drive came near the end. The truck pulled up to a herd of Impala. Everything seemed to be normal at first until two...

African Safari
January 23, 2008 - Arusha, Tanzania
Arusha Namita: Today we headed to Arusha, Tanzania to start our next big excursion in Africa - safari in East Africa!  Initially we were scheduled to fly from Jo'burg to Arusha via Nairobi but with the Canadian government having issued a warning against non-essential travel in Kenya, we changed our flight and flew directly to Arusha.  With this change, we needed to notify our safari tour company - Victoria Expeditions (VE) - as they were arranging our pick up from the airport. We wanted to...
