Dubai
April 6, 2013 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
We organised a cab to go to Dubai and headed off at 120kph plus. Well not immediately at 120kph but as soon as we were out of town the cab hustled along with the speed alert beeping almost constantly while I read the notice on the side window about the speed restrictions on taxis. Of course most of the rest of the traffic was blasting along at or near the 140kph speed limit so we seemed almost as slow as the lumbering and smoking trucks and mini buses crammed with construction labourers and...

March 23, 2012 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Now that the conference is officially over, I met up with my second cousin, who lives in Dubai, to catch up and chat. It was so nice seeing her!   Before leaving, we talked about what I experienced here in the United Arab Emirates, and I spoke to her about some of the gender roles I found odd, which I mention in yesterday’s blog entry. I Am Woman...Hear Me Roar!!!
March 21, 2012 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
During the morning portion of the conference, we talked about various forms of human trafficking: sex trafficking, organ trafficking, labor traffick, mail order brides, child soldiers, etc. It was a very heavy topic. Thereafter, we headed out to the desert to sand dune. Everyone was talking about how fast the cars go on the dunes, saying that most ppl throw up from the fast movements. I was nervous about going, but....YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!!! I went and sat in the front seat!! OMG was it fun! We...

Under the Law
March 19, 2012 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Today we learned about Shari'ah law through reading a case and acting it out under the rules of the Islamic courts. It was interesting to learn about the rules of the law, where they come from, and how they affect the people that they govern. Before the conference, I thought that Sharia only governed criminal, civil, and public cases (as in the U.S.). However, I learned that Shari'ah is based upon the Qur'an and Sunnah (actions and sayings of the Prophet Mohammed) and serves as a moral code...
