Doing little in Dubai
October 19, 2017 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Well we are now heading towards home – one-third down and two-thirds to go. We woke up in time to go to breakfast at 9.30am. It was a good spread with hot food cooked to order as well as plenty of choices. We rate the Le Meridien Hotel in Abu Dhabi as 100% and this was probably 90%. Most good hotels make around 80 on our scale. After breakfast I caught up on some journal bits and pieces before relaxing and Margaret sat by the pool to read and relax. After a long siesta (still a bit...

Stirring up the Sand
August 30, 2017 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
After our recent early starts and latish arrival yesterday we took the chance to sleep a little longer this morning before going down to look for breakfast. There was quite a spread from fresh fruit and yoghurt through to Hot English, without bacon (or at least we couldn't find where it was quarantined). Our meal allowance from Emirates meant we could charge yesterday's lunch, dinner and drinks last night and breakfast this morning. Without keeping track of our spending we managed to spend $164 of our $160 credit and the hotel absorbed the $4 over-run. Yesterday, in anticipation and on the advice of a somewhat cynical Concierge, we booked a 6.15am shuttle...

March 23, 2012 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Now that the conference is officially over, I met up with my second cousin, who lives in Dubai, to catch up and chat. It was so nice seeing her!   Before leaving, we talked about what I experienced here in the United Arab Emirates, and I spoke to her about some of the gender roles I found odd, which I mention in yesterday’s blog entry. Having lived in the UAE for four years and traveled to other Muslim countries, she was able to give me some perspective on what I witnessed. I viewed the...
