25. Driving Down to New Mexico, Colorado and Utah

We drove along Highway 10 and left a dusty Arizona and entered the even more barren New Mexico, our fourth state on this road trip.  (Not counting our separate trip to Hawaii).  We noticed that the terrain seemed to be getting more barren and the temperature higher, the further we drove along, as we entered the Chihuahuan Desert. It is not like the deserts of North Africa, as there are a few shrubs that populate the parched surface, as well as the odd tumbleweed that blows across the roads....

Arches & Canyonlands

  We stayed at the Moab KOA which had some nice conveniences: including unlimited hot showers and warm water w/ a dishwashing station although it was somewhat noisy there. Our location put us in between the two national parks. Arches was the closest and unfortunately the campgrounds were full within the national parks. After the weekend when we could have gone camping within, heavy thunderstorms hit. One of the days we left our KOA site with the sun behind us and as we drove up the mountain...
