Heavenly Halong Bay
January 12, 2012 - Halong Bay, Vietnam
After 2 days exploring Hanoi, we check out of our lovely hotel (thank you again Lois!) and meet our mini bus outside at 7.30am, nice and early to whisk us east to the coast. We weave through traffic, and keep our lives in tact … honestly, the way they dodge cars as they overtake is insane ! I see a few cows, horses and dogs that I want to adopt and take back to Tofino, poor things, Dave even saw a small dog in a crate outside a restaurant … you can imagine his fate !! We arrive at Halong...

Halong Bay, entre tormentas
July 24, 2010 - Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay, Vietnam
July 3, 2010 - Halong Bay, Vietnam
In the last few days we've spent a lot of time cooped up in internet cafe's trying to work out what the deal is with Halong Bay cruises, and no matter how hard we tried, could not get to the bottom of it all... One review of a company would say how great it all was, the next would say there were cockroaches coming out of the beds!? Honestly, every company was the same, and no-one would garantee anyone (not even Lonely Planet!). Anyway, as you can no doubt tell, we were more than a little bit...

Halong Bay
April 23, 2010 - Halong Bay, Vietnam
On Wednesday I went on a 3 day, 2 night tour of Halong Bay. When I got on the bus I was the only one there, then a group of 17 people who knew each other got onto the bus. They were all VERY fun and nice, and I soon became one of the group. They are mainly English, but there are also a few Canadians and Germans. We have a 3 or 4 hour drive to Halong Bay, then we get on our boat! We visit a cave, go kayaking, then swim (jumping off the boat into the water, which was actually pretty scary...

1,969 Islands
March 14, 2010 - Halong Bay, Vietnam
“Ha Long Bay’s labyrinthine network of limestone outcrops looms dramatically out of the Gulf of Tonkin and imprints itself forever in my memory.” Today marks my first visit to a Vietnamese port.  As one of the world’s last surviving one-party communist states, it would be nice to say that it had the same effect on me as China, but that’s not the case.  The buildings in the small port town of Hong Gai were very meager to say the least.  It was, instead, the natural beauty of the...
