Days 29 and 30
September 18, 2012 - Livingstone, Zambia
Firstly, thanks everyone for the comments.  We've so enjoyed reading them and it makes us feel connected to all of you. Before we set off from Muckleneuk Farm, Terry found that the fan on the car had lost several of its blades, so we were going to have to do something about that once we got to Livingstone which was about 200 km down the road. However, we stopped fo a cup of tea with the farmer, Ian Bruce-Miller and his daughter, Emma, who farms with him, before we headed off.  Delightful...

Day 27 and 28
September 17, 2012 - Choma, Zambia
We decided to find a campsite near Choma that we had read about in a birding book about Important Birding Areas in Zambia.  It is on the way to Livingstone, where we are going to stop for a couple of days. The road is good, but as soon it passes any kind of settlement there are really fierce ‘sleeping policemen’ in the road, so the going isn’t as fast as one would like.  The approach to Lusaka from the North is awful.  There is a huge pall of smoke from the charcoal burning and all...

Day 26
September 17, 2012 - Lusaka, Zambia
Day 26 Today we headed back towards Lusaka, leaving Kasanka.First we had to fill up with petrol and change some money.  All transactions in Zambia have to be conducted in Kwatcha as of the last couple of months.  We had been told that we could use US dollars everywhere, but this has now changed, so in fact we have had to change our dollars back into Kwatcha.  We would have been better to have brought Rands as they are easily changed here and at a reasonably favourable rate.So off to the...

Days 23 to 25
September 14, 2012 - Kasanka National Park, Zambia
We left the community education centre after we had met the manager and had some of their projects explained to us. Their problem is the same as that of many conservation areas, in that the local people who are mainly subsistence farmers cannot see the value of using the land for conservation when they are struggling to feed their families. So they are trying to teach them about sustainability and the value of conservation areas to them. They were training them in fish-farming and...

Day 22 A tough day in Africa
September 14, 2012 - Kasanka National Park, Zambia
We began the day by visiting the grounds of Shiwa House, which wasn’t as smart as we expected it to be – a bit run-down and in need of quite a few repairs, but clearly was once a magnificent place. We had a lovely chat to ‘the lady of the manor’ who we met in the garden – a real down-to-earth farmer’s wife who finds herself running this great house which is her husband’s inheritance and a huge responsibility. As well as the house, they have a large farm, farming dairy and beef,...
