Vic Falls and Hwange
August 20, 2016 - Hwange, Zimbabwe
August 20   So up early and we headed for Victoria Falls.  Although we have been there a couple of times before, their beauty and majesty are something that should be on everyone’s ‘bucket list’.  The local name for the Victoria Falls is ‘Mosi Ao Tunya’ – The Smoke That Thunders.   Going early in the morning was an excellent idea, as the light was wonderful anad there weren’t hordes of tourists.  Although it is the dry season, there was a reasonable amount of water...

And now Vic Falls
August 19, 2016 - Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
The border post between Botswana and Zimbabwe is at Kazungulu.  The border post between Botswana and Zambia is also at Kazungulu and this is a ferry which crosses the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers.   We arrived at Kazungulu and missed the turn off to the Zimbabwe border post and found ourselves heading towards Zambia.  That in itself was no real problem, the border posts being only about 3 or 4 km apart.  However, what was remarkable was the long queue of huge...

Days 11 to 14 Glitch and Mana Pools
September 2, 2012 - Mana Pools, Zimbabwe
On the way to Mana Pools we struggled to find anywhere in Kariba to stock up on groceries, so decided to make do with what tins, long life milk, etc we had.  So on to Mana Pools through beautiful countryside - hills covered in grass and dry trees and all more or less uninhabited.  The road winds uphill and then down the escarpment to the lower reaches of the Zambesi that runs from the dam to the sea and is the Southern end of the Great Rift Valley.  There si lots of evidence of trucks...

Days 9 and 10
August 30, 2012 - Kariba, Zimbabwe
We were directed not to be late for the ferry, so 8am saw us queueing with 6 other vehicles, one towing a caravan.  We waited while the ferry offloaded its westward bound load and then we were carefully loaded according to size.  Our bakkie was one of the smallest vehicles so there wasn't too much problem for us, but the caravan and bigger 4x4's were packed in with only centimetres to spare between them.  The skill with which the ferrymen directed us and parked the cars was someting to...

Day 8
August 29, 2012 - Kariba, Zimbabwe
We've been away a whole week already. Todweay are heading for Mlibisi, at the Western end of Lake Kariba. to catch the ferry tomorrow morning. On the way out nof Hwange Game Reserve we stopped at Mandavu Picnic Site, which was in slightly better repair (functioning toilets and showers) and next to a beautiful dam teeming with game.  -  huge herds of buffalo, elephant and buck as well as large crocodiles.  the attendant was catching bream at the water's edge. On to Sinamatela camp whiich...
