Shalom שָׁלוֹם!

August 4, 2008 - Haifa, Israel

Shalom שָׁלוֹם (the internet is so useful!!)!

I am at School!!!  I moved in yesterday, and my room is really cool!  I still no Hebrew but that is my fault for every time my dad tries to teach me-I run away. Ok so I am not the best summer but that is about to change for I have FIVE HOURS a day of Hebrew.  The school is nice but very different then Colgate.  First it is all modern-this might be because Colgate started before Israel was even a country.  The building lacks the charm of Colgate but it is very modern and in the main building there is an observation deck.  It has a great view because I am (the University) is on top of the major mountain in Haifa.  I can oversee the whole of the city, and were on the cost which gives you such an amazing view.  I will try to take picture but they put up glass for someone commit suicide there.  It is all super hot here and I would normally never say this but I  wish for some of the cold we have at Colgate.  There also is tight security-I have to show my iD to a guard with big guns, but that is ok for it makes you feel safe.  My room is great-I have a single and my own bathroom.  There are five other rooms like that in the apartment and we have a common living room and kitchen.  The only thing that the kitchen has to cook on it is a hotplate—so we will see what type of food I will come up with especially never having seen any of the spices.  Do not worry I will bring my new cooking techniques home!!!  The people seem very nice and my apartment-mates are from all over the world! Today I went into the city with my dad and I think that I am starting to understand the bus but who knows I could get lost.  The funniest thing keep happening to me, people keep asking me for help in Hebrew!  I have no idea what to say to them so I just look at them and they realize that I have no idea what they are saying and walk away.  For the best news of all there is a library—not just any library but supposedly it is the largest in Israel this make me very very happy!  I have not gone in yet but have no fear tomorrow is another day.  Tonight we have a get together- with music and falafel’s-which is everywhere and the saddest part is that I am starting to really really like it! Well I am off to get something to eat for I am very hungry!!!  Miss you all tons-I will write again soon!
