Day Seven: Valdez

July 3, 2008 - Valdez, Alaska, United States

We were up early this morning and after a most delicious breakfast of bacon and eggs set in the lovely setting of the American Legion parking lot, we headed out toward the Whittier Tunnel.  The railway tunnel to Whittier was paved in recent years yet it remains one-lane.  What that means is that trains as well as traffic in both direction, must take turns to use the tunnel.  If you miss the opening your next opportunity to pass through is an hour later.  We knew we had to catch a car-ferry on the Alaska Marine Highway System that only runs to Valdez every 3-4 days so we planned to be early for a change.Storefronts in Whittier.jpg

It was sprinkling as we pulled into Whittier.  We stepped into one store and purchased some Dayquil and some Nyquil for beautiful Bill.  He sounds absolutely lousy!  Kayaks in Whittier.jpgWe soon headed back to the RV where we waited until it was time to load our ride, the Chenega.  I had hoped for clear weather for our trip through Prince William Sound but that was not to be.  At least it was rainy when we were stuck inside for the day instead of out on an adventure.  We saw several large ice flows along the way to Valdez.  From a distance ice flows look like someone tossed a large piece of bright blue plastic in the water.  As you get closer the striking blue of glacial ice becomes more apparent.  car ferry Chenega.jpgI would have loved to have gone a bit closer to get a better look but then I thought I heard Celine Dion singing in the back of my brain…Whittier boat harbor.jpg

Bill and I both dozed a little on the boat.  We disembarked the Chenega at around 4:00 p.m. and headed off to find our RV site.  It’s really not such a difficult proposal since the town is very compact on this little strip of land prior to shooting straight up into the mountains.  We are staying at Eagle’s Rest RV Park that not only has a laundry mat and hot showers, but they also have the best high-speed WiFi I have discovered in Alaska!  At last I can catch up. Eagle's Rest RV Park.jpg

After we had our spaghetti dinner we strolled down to the harbor to check out the action.  At one of the fish cleaning stations there is a long chute that would have made a great slide prior to its current use.  Now it serves as the chum chute for whatever parts of the fish are no longer needed.  The “slide” is filled with fish guts, bones, and hungry seagulls.  Seagull chum line2.jpgIt is supposed to empty into a large bin down by the water.  It’s mostly successful I would say.  We watched as a bald eagle gave his or her best effort to join the feast but the gulls chased the larger bird away.  We eventually made our way to one of the local pubs (with an awesome view of mountains), had a quick beverage and headed home for the night.  Valdez pier.jpgWe’re going to pump Bill up with Nyquil and hopefully he’ll be able to enjoy the 4th of July tomorrow.  Hey – they are having fireworks at 11:00 p.m. even though it won’t be dark.  We want to be a part of that!
