This is the easy part

January 28, 2007 - Los Angeles, California, United States

I got to LA easily enough. This part of the trip is easy because I know LA and Keegan picked me up at the airport. We are so accostomed to pulling up on the outer ring at the Portland Airport to pick up visitors. But he did that and a police officer immediately came up to warn him. Phew....no ticket though.

We found our way to San Pedro and to my friend's apartment. Once we had our bearings we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant. I never feel we have good, authentic, Mexican food in Portland. Keegan said he could tell it was a good restaurant because there were about 10 uniformed cops having dinner or picking up dinner. It was nice to see Keegan and we were both amazed by the size of the Port of Los Angeles. You can see the whole port from the cliffs of San Pedro. We noticed a very large land mass off the coast. I guess I've never seen Catalina from that angle. It seems so large and close. We were both so amazed. We both remembered a fun family trip to Catalina to celebrate my 40th birthday.

Tonight I plan to read the rest of a book so I don't have to carry it on my trip. It won The Booker Prize in 2006; The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. It is about India and also Indians in America. I've enjoyed it so much that I plan to discuss it for my reading group book.

So the only hard parts about today were the emotions of saying goodbye to Carl and Keegan. Oh, and it was hard to say goodbye to Bailey since she it getting to be such an old dog and she is a little lame due to a ruptured ACL.

Tomorrow, January 28th, we leave at 11 am from LA and arrive in Singapore at 12 midnight on January 30th. That is a long time in the air even if we pass over the International Date Line.
