NYC Update!

May 17, 2008 - New York, New York, United States

Hello Everyone!  It's been a LONG while since I have last updated!  I apologize!  I haven't really updated because nothing too exciting has been going on.  I know your probably saying "Nothing exciting in NYC?"  LoL...Well...it's expensive!  I count every penny I spend!  It stinks right now.  I have been trying to keep busy when not auditioning, but its hard.  I go to Central Park alot!  Almost every day...its a nice walk and makes for good exercise since I can't afford a gym.  I miss going to the gym alot.  I used to go 5 times a week in Vegas and its great.  I feel much better when I go to the gym...mentally and physically.  My gym membership in Vegas cost me a whopping 18 bucks a month...here in NYC they are around 80-150 a month!  Yikes!

Lets see; what else?  As for auditions.  When I first moved here there were alot of auditions.  I was auditioning around 2-3 times a day some days.  I got here around the second half of audition season.  Auditions usually start happening around the end of January and continue through the end of April.  Since I got here March 18th I kind of missed out on some things!  But oh well.  I think like I have said before...I have had some GREAT auditions and some NOT so great auditions!  In the end, I still haven't been able to land my next performing job yet.  I have come close and who knows maybe I will still get something.  Auditions like I said have slowed down.  I am now only going to about 1 or 2 a week now.

Which brings me to my next plan of action.  I am going home!  Financially its the best thing that I can do.  I have only been home for about two weeks since August of 2007.  I went home for a week in December 2007, and then I was home for a about a week in March of 2008.  So I am going to sublet my apartment for 2-3 months and come home and relax by the pool!  AND...Join A Gym!  And work and save some more money!  I mean I could stay here, not audition, bust my butt to pay the bills, live in a little room, and have no gym membership....OR....I could come home get a job working 2-4 days a week, save money, relax by the pool, join a gym, and have a decent size bedroom.  SO that is what I am doing.  I probably will most likely move back to NYC around the middle or the end of August!

I have seen a number of shows since I have been here...I do treat myself sometimes...If I don't I will go crazy!  So far I have seen Spring Awakening, Jersey Boys, Cry Baby, A Catered Affair, Altar Boyz, Sunday In The Park With George, and Blue Man Group.  Tonight (Saturday May 17th) I will be seeing The Little Mermaid.  I also want to see a play called "August: Osage County" its nominated for Best Play and I have heard great things about it.  So I look forward to seeing that as well.

This past week has been fun too.  Every year my school has a New York Showcase showing off the graduating senior class.  Well that happened this week.  They also hold a big PPU Alumni Reception here in the city in Times Square...where they have an open bar and free food.  Its a nice way to mingle and catch up with everyone and see what their up to!  I will post some pictures from that event!

I am also going to post some pictures from a street fair that I went to today.  They have them throughout the summer all over the city.  They just close off the streets and put up tents and its a party!  Ha...well not really a party, but the street is filled with tons of vendors.

I wish I had more exciting news to report.  I would be amazing if I could tell you I got a job somewhere...but not yet! :)  I am looking forward to coming home for a bit to breathe.  And I do look forward to coming back to NYC at the end of the summer.

Okay, until next time...Take care everyone.

-Matthew
