The Mudslide

March 9, 2008

The next day, March 9th, we headed back to Tarma but were totally thwarted by a mudslide which had occurred on the road a few hours before. Somehow a truck ended up teetering to the side near the edge of the mountain on a pile of dirt from the mudslide, mud and truck blocking both lanes of traffic. It was unbearably hot and there was no guarantee the line would move anytime soon so we made our way back to Pichanaki and passed the afternoon playing cards and watching the rainstorm which rolled in after lunch. Since we ate at the same restaurant, my amiga from the discoteca (Zamira) was there and we exchanged phone and e-mail addresses. After we left, I tried to use the internet in town but it was so comically slow that I could accomplish in half an hour was checking a few e-mails. Proof that there is somewhere in the world that has slower internet than the computer at my parent’s house. After hearing news that the mudslide had been cleared, we finally got back on the bus (woo-hoo) and reached Tarma that night having lost a day of activities.
