Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea

November 27, 2007 - Phnum Pénh, Cambodia

I have lots of both, but have lagged behind in my, what was meant to be regular, updates of this journal. So perhaps i'll just pick the best.

Our route from Vientiane was originally meant to be a flight to Hanoi, but we changed our mind and went south to Si Phan Don, the 4000 islands, I was ready for some time on my own and went ahead of the others who made their way down via Savanakhet and Pakse. I spent about a week on the islands and from there travelled via luxury bus (which turned out be a boat on the river....) to Stung Treng, which is a hole. Obviously we didnt want to spend much time here so booked tickets for the morning after to Siem Reap (the city next to Angkor Wat) Siem Reap is directly west of Stung Treng (approx 5 hours), Phnom Penh (the capital) is approx 5 hours directly south of Stung Treng. Our bus journey was a 12 hour treat 'directly' to Siem Reap, via Phnom Penh. We spent 2 days at Angkor Wat, getting up ridiculously early to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat, it wasnt particuarly impressive. As we only had/have 2 weeks in Cambodia we moved pretty quickly to Phnom Penh, were I spent 36 hours lying on my bed being sick unable to move, followed by a day visiting the S-21 museum and killing fields. From Phnom Penh we had a relatively short (a mere 4 hours) journey to Kampot where we stayed 2 nights including a visit to Kep and Rabbit Island, our first swim in the sea! and from Kampot a taxi drive to Sihanoukville, where we are now.

Well, that was a brief & boring description of our trip since Vientiane, I shall think of all the interesting things that have happened to us and write them when I'm at a computer without a broken keyboard. x
